Introduction

I was invited as a guest (thank you, Roberto!) to a blind tasting of the 2007 Produttori crus, a lineup which I served (non-blind) about a year and a half ago. The wines were basically popped and poured, and followed in the glass for about an hour and a half. I've noted my guesses where I was able to make one -- we knew ahead of time that the 2007 crus, the 2007 normale, and two mystery 2005s were in this lineup.

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • 2013 Bruno Giacosa Roero Arneis 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Served double blind. A bit of green herbaceousness on the nose. The palate shows some neutral oak, as well as a nice touch of white fruit. Round in texture, I'm guessing this sees a little bit of malo. Good freshness, but a touch hot on the back end. I wanted to guess the Roero Arneis, considering the theme, but I went with what I tasted and guessed Bordeaux blanc.

  • 2005 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #10038. Showing a clear amount of bricking. Truffley, with a bit of earth, this seems really simple on the palate. It's pretty clear that this is showing some aged characteristics. With air, some odd coffee and soy notes start to show up. Perhaps not the soundest of bottles, as this shows a lot more advanced than I thought it would be. I did correctly identify this as one of the two 2005s. My 11th, group's 12th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9770. This shows a real bright red fruit character, but on both the nose and palate, this seemed quite simplistic. Not much depth here, I found this easy to enjoy without requiring too much effort. On the finish, there was a clear touch of heat which I found off-putting. My 12th, group's 11th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9406. The colour on this indicates a bit more bricking than the rest of the wines. I guessed this as the other 2005 in the lineup. Very savoury on the palate, and not particularly complex either. The fruit is much more muted here, and the bottle seems just a bit dull today. My 10th, group's 10th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #12500. The nose here shows a fair bit of dustiness, coupled with a more simplistic and lighter character. Based on the relative breathiness of this wine in comparison to the later ones, I had this (correctly) pegged as one of the three northern crus. There was a slight sweetness to this wine, and I found it wanting just a touch more acidity. My 7th, group's 4th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9399. Higher toned nose with lots of bright red fruit and florals, but much less of that on the palate. This seems to be one of the more shutdown examples today, and while I can feel its density, all I could pick out was a touch of earthiness. The finish came off slightly bitter, but this was perhaps the first wine of the tasting that really stood out to me as having some good stuffing. My 5th, group's 7th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9440. Darker fruit on the nose, this seems to be where we start crossing the line from red to black (it turns out that the tasting was ordered along the same lines as one I did a year and a half ago). Perhaps a bit more earthiness here, I really like this for its more complete profile. I'm not sure that this showed as funky as it did last time, but I've always been a fan of the Muncagota/Moccagatta bottling. My 1st, group's 11th (in fact, this was a very polarizing wine, with multiple first and last place votes).

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. L10.119. I actually wrote that this was the most middle-of-the-road of all of the wines tasted. The acidity on this did stick out a little bit, being perhaps a touch on the tart side. The tannins were perhaps a bit too big for the smaller shoes of this wine, but besides that, everything seemed to be in a good place, and nothing stuck out in particular. My 9th, group's 9th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9609. Dense and dark, with a sense that this wine just isn't quite ready to be broached. Earthy and closed up, but there's definitely some decent material here -- it just needs time for it to reveal itself. My 8th, group's 6th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9401. Shows lots of ripe fruit on the palate, but perhaps a smidgen less acidity than the other wines. One of the richest and roundest wines of the lineup, but that actually makes this quite enjoyable. It does seem a little riper and hotter, so I guessed that this was one of the better southern crus. My 4th, group's 3rd.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9161. Lovely red fruit character here, with a deft lightness and elegance. While I love the tasty and somewhat juicy red fruit here, perhaps it's just a little bit too giving. The fruit came off just a little bit confected for my taste. At the same time, despite the lightness, this was clearly one of the more powerful wines. My 3rd, group's 2nd.

  • 2005 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #8431. This may have been a bit simpler than the rest of the wines, but what it lost in complexity it made up for in sheer deliciousness. The nose is on the high-toned side, and shows a lot of light red fruit. A bit more fruity on the palate as well, this is a very pretty example of a Barbaresco. My 2nd, group's 5th.

  • 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served single blind. #9711. There's an interesting touch of orange peel on the nose that I couldn't find in any other wine, but besides that, there's a richer fuller fruit profile here. Intriguingly, there's also a hint of spice here that differs from all the other wines. Clearly, this is a bit of an odd duck. This is slightly riper than the rest of the wines as well. My 6th, group's 1st.

  • 2009 Antinori Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Tenute Marchese 85 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

Golden colour. It has been a very, very long time since I've had any vin santo, but it's pretty much how I remember it. There's something about this wine that reminds me of some passito whites, but this doesn't have quite that same amount of concentration. There are still the textbook elements of honey, caramel, raisins, and marmalade, and this stuff is really quite tasty, but I only wish there were a bit more acid.
