By the glass at Restaurant David Toutain. Disgorged in 2011, this was an NV with a lot of character on it. The nose had a lovely brightness to it, with lime zest, green apples and a touch of lifted spice. There was just a touch of brioche that spoke of the Chardonnay, but otherwise, this was a light and bright bouquet. The palate had that same lithe tones too, with pure notes of limes and lemons and green apples laced with lively acidity and a fine sprightly mousse. With certain dishes, like a lovely Whiting, an certain umami, salted butter note started coming out as well. A very enjoyable NV.
A very impressive St Romain. This was all mineral and chalk and light citrus notes on the nose, with a little hint of white pepper on the side. Expressive but in a subtle way The palate though just exploded with when paired with a lovely lobster and verbena dish, with the citrus notes in the food echoed by a lovely fragrant citrus flavour in the wine, and the rich lobster flesh calling out a lovely sweet fleshy white fruitiness. I liked the balance here too, fresh without being quite bright, soft without being flabby, with a nice lingering fruit and flower finish. A very nice wine. Neither the deepest nor most intense, and I do not think this will be a long lived wine, but it was very pleasant indeed and very enjoyable over lunch.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
A good food wine. The nose was typical Savigny, with sweet wafts of strawberries and blackcurrants tinged with herb and earth aromas. Nice. The palate showed a good depth of blackcurrants overlaid against a core of sweeter strawberry tones, and then more of those herby tones on the finish, all this framed by fine tannins that gave a slight rustic grip and plenty of fine acidity. There was an easy sweetness to this that went well with the earthier tones and the rustic charms. A nice Savigny, with a great sense of typicity. Very enjoyable with our chicken dish too. Decent when young, though a few more years in the bottle will do it a world of good.
