Introduction

An outstanding wine tasting dinner made particularly enjoyable by the company of wine aficionados and the gracious hospitality of the hosts -- thank you Brad and Magda!. La Pizza Fresca Ristorante, a true NYC gem, brings together wine lovers with the world class winemakers such as Giancarlo Pacenti. Giancarlo was a terrific speaker and a passionate advocate for his style of wine making. It was a treat to taste the older Siro Pacenti vintages as well as to compare side by side the more recent Pelagrilli and the Vecchio Vigne lines.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2014 Siro Pacenti Rosso di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

The wine is made from the youngest planted vines, up to 4 yrs old. Strong vanilla oak aromatics upfront. In the mouth, the oak is less pronounced and instead the wine has an almost barbera like taste profile of mineral red wild fruit with a hint of a clay like earthiness. Almost stopped noticing the oak -- that is until taking a first sip of the '99 Pacenti Brunello. Afterwards, this Rosso is oaky and painfully young once again.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

A mature, masculine wine, showing an aged sangio taste of a ripe dark prunes, cedar, cocoa. Darker and bolder than both '01 and '04, recalling the big '99 Tenuta Nuova or older Fontalloro wines. A fall wine -- aromatics of autumn leaves, dried fruit, tobacco. Still somewhat tannic, despite the fully matured fruit. A classic expression of the masculine sangiovese.

  • 2001 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

A fragrant, graceful and faminine expression of an aged Brunello. Still some oak on the note. Overall, flowery and perfumed wine, showing black cherry, orange peel, chestnuts. Silky smooth now. Fully evolved and drinking well now.

  • 2004 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Showing some oak on the nose still. Delicate and clear, reminiscent of the '01, showing lilacs and floral aromatics in the finish. Smooth and balanced overall, a great contrast to the roasted fruit profile of the '99 Brunello.

  • 2006 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

More primary, ripe and more alcoholic that either '04 or '01. Sweeter overall too, more of the wild red fruit profile, softer texture and less mineral. Tannic wine though the tannins are fine grained and mild. Probably needs another couple of years to shed some of the primary characteristics.
