Introduction

Quick visit to northern Piedmont. Our plan was to taste Nebbiolo wines from Carema, Gattinara, Ghemme and Boca. The visit to Boca wineries we delayed to the next trip as we were afraid of not being resistant against buying more good Nebbiolo.

From most of the wines I have tasted already earlier vintages and have enjoyed them during a meal. I know that my scores are quite high, and might be lower if tasted blind against more modern wines, but knowing how they fit to a traditional brasato or other specialities from Piedmont, I rate them accordingly.

Flight 3 - Anzivino, Gattinara (3 Notes)

Always a good choice to stay overnight.

The grapes for this wine come from the vineyard Valferana (Gattinara), they dry on mats until December.
Intense nose, sour cherry, alcohol is present but will be better integrated with one or two years of further cellaring. Good structure with long finish. Best to drink between 2018 and 2025. 91 to 92 points.

  • 2009 Nervi Gattinara Vigna Molsino 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

You can smell the concentration but it feels a bit restrained though it is already quite smooth, shows some sour cherry and tobacco in the background. Think it needs some more years to open up and has enough structure for a long life. Compared to Valferana that is very typical for the northern piedmont, this could be easily taken for a Barbaresco. 92 to 94 points.

Flight 5 - Osteria La Brioska, Gattinara (2 Notes)

I can highly recommend this restaurant in the center of Gattinara. Excellent traditional food, big selection of local wines, very nice ambiente and friendly team.

Closing

Northern piedmont is worth to visit, because of the friendly people and the winemakers that can resist short-term trends and still produce wines that are not simple to drink in its youth, having big aging potential and are best with traditional dish or with cheese.
