Yellow-golden; nose is highly aromatic, rich yeast and brioche but also clean and precise, citrus fruit; palate is rich, excellent depth of flavor, pear and citrus fruit, lemon peel, intense clean minerality and high acidity; medium finish. Superb, excellent balance between richness and fresh elegance. Similar to the Savart I tried recently, but with just a tad less length. 92-93
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Light ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose is highly aromatic with red cherry fruit, white pepper, floral lavender, complex and with depth; palate is light bodied, medium tannins that are still youthful, plenty of red fruits, surprisingly medium-plus acid with freshness throughout, medium alcohol (thought 13-13.5%, bottle says 14%); medium-long finish. A lovely wine with plenty of CnDP character, wonderful depth and complexity on both the palate and the nose, overall an elegantly styled CnDP without brett or dense meatiness but plenty of spice, pepper, floral. Certainly enjoyable to drink now but also seems like it could have years of development ahead. 6.5 years since my last bottle and my experience is similar to last time. One of my favorite '98 Chateaneufs. 93-94
Medium ruby with a purple tinge, youthful appearing; highly aromatic with intense blackberry, black pepper, deep and a bit rustic; palate is medium bodied, medium acidity, balanced black fruit but it fades a tad quickly through the midpalate; medium finish. Wonderful cornas with a rustic flavor, approachable now but could also use a bit more age. Nice! 91-92
