Ballaro

Very good, but not as generous and layered as the 2008 Mousse or 2008 Camille Saves served side-by-side. Those two were more open, generous and exciting now while the Clouet appeared to be a bit closed-in, dense and uninteresting. I'd hold and give this some time.

My favorite of the six Champagnes tonight. A gorgeous palate with a creaminess factor that was so appealing in combination with the fresh, chiseled structure.

A complete Champagne at this early age. Creamy fruits layered in with fresh acids. Bright and fresh. Drinking nicely now, probably picks up a bit more complexity with time.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. My favorite nose amongst the six Brezza Barolos tonight -- full with explosive, lifted, bright aromatics that included red cherry, smokey spice, savory herbs and new leather. Clearly young on the palate with loads of freshness and verve. Echoes the nose with some florals added to the mix. Bright and generous today, but should only improve and develop layers and nuance with time.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. Shows it's vintage stripes with a riper, roasted and plummier flavor profile. Body is also more lush and rich without the freshness and delineation of the 2008. Solid Barolo but don't see this improving much or achieving the highs of other more classic vintages.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. This one kept improving with air and I suspect a nice long decant would help this show even better. Aromas of mature red cherry with old leather, smoke, spice and herbs. Palate has medium-to-full in body with lush mature fruit and an incredible amount of spice. The back end is ever more full bodied with firm tannins. Long, dense finish. All the components are here. Can age for another 10-20 years, but drinking well now. Give this a long decant.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. Similar but more intense and brooding than the 2008 Sarmassa had in the prior flight. Full, rich, singing nose has red and black cherry and intense smoky spice notes. The aromas here though clearly have another level of depth compared to the regular Sarmassa. Medium-to-full bodied on the palate with lots of delineation and layering. Drinking fine now, but once again, there are layers that are still holding back. I preferred the base Sarmassa tonight, but this has 2-3 points of upside.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. The nose here is riper and a bit pruney. Palate follows suit with a riper, richer, softer profile than the other Brezzas tonight, without the similar freshness and verve of the other vintages. Best early. I'd drink up.

Pop n' pour with an ~1 hour slow ox. A real treat. Gorgeously complex nose of earth, leather, tar, dried cherry with some mild funk. The palate is still very fresh with round, lush fruit and bright acids. The wine kept getting better and the last glass was the best. Give this lots of air and it won't disappoint.

NV Champagne Suenen Champagne Grand Cru C + C Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

Served as a warm up wine. This had a decidedly funky note in the aroma that I didn't love. Otherwise a fine BdB but that nose was hard to get over.

2002 Vincent Couche Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points

A terrific bottle of bubbles. Served as a warm up, so I wasn't playing close attention but I really liked the combination of freshness and richness (biscuit, baked apples). Good precision and poise. Great value.

Hugely energetic and lively Champagne. Very clean flavors -- lots of green apple, mineral and zest. Bright and explosive in the mouth. Fun and easy drinking as a warm up.
