Introduction

Did a fun tasting to close out summer of white wines. Focused on SB and Chardonnay, threw in a wild card for fun too.

Flight 1 - Wild Card! (1 Note)

  • 2015 Pievalta Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore

Italy, Marche, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore

Very herbal on the nose, basil, chervil even a hint of thyme. Slight floral nose as well with a hint of lime pith. Not fruit driven at all, also a little mineral edge, not to be mistaken for a Chablis, but just a hint. Very clean nose with M+ Acid and M Body. Interesting wine, perfect for food, worked so well with Shrimp Salad.

Flight 2 - Sauvignon Blanc Wines (3 Notes)

  • 2016 St. Supéry Sauvignon Blanc

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Fresh lively SB, tasted more like New Zealand than Napa. Grapefruit, jasmine, Lime zest and lemon. M+ Acidity and M Body. Showed just a hint of green aromas, more similar to jalapeno, than asparagus. Also just a hint of bitter on the end, similar to citrus pith

  • 2014 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Le Petit Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Oak showed very clearly on this wine, but it was well integrated. I personally think Oak is less distracting on a white Bordeaux blend than on a Chardonnay. Had a very floral nose with hints of cream soda. Did not show any green notes at all. Did have a light lime and lemon hint with just a touch of mineral edge, very nice wine.

  • 2004 Château Graville-Lacoste Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

If you still have any of these I'd suggest drinking them soon. Past it's "Best by" date, but still provided some pleasure. Oxidation shows with a hint of green almond. Once you get past that there is a note of guava and some grassiness. Reminded me of a White Rioja in many ways, with just a hint of grass...

Flight 3 - Chardonnay and Chardonnay Blends (5 Notes)

  • 2014 Domaine des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Great value for the price. A good amount of mineral on the nose, with some citrus and a floral backing. Also a slight apple or pear note to it. Stainless steel aged, and shows as the acidity is cracking and no signs of oxidation. Also I cannot tell if there were any lees stirring? Doesn't appear to be, but I may be mistaken.

Nice wine that is perfect for fish or shellfish, not as much depth as many other premier cru's, but for the price a steal

  • 2015 Domaine des Ardoisières Argile Blanc

    France, Savoie, Vin des Allobroges

A white blend that has Chardonnay so it was included in our tasting. Very mineral, just as much as the Chablis right off the bat. Shows some yeasty notes and bitter almond as well. Floral nose with hints of bruised yellow apple, and pear. High acidity and potentially just a hint of RS? May be mistaken on that note though... Very pleasant and one of my favorite of the line up, hard to define with so much going on...

  • 2015 Domaine Marius Delarche Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille Blanc

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

So different than the Chablis! Banana, Yellow Apple and a pear nose. Does not show signs of new oak, but just a softer edge I'm assuming from barrel aging. Does also have a slight citrus edge almost like a lemon meringue pie. M+ Body, feels heavy after the Chablis, but still somehow graceful... Very good Chardonnay, pushing the limits of what I prefer in a white wine...

  • 2014 Patz & Hall Chardonnay Bootlegger's Hill

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Ripe fruit just right from the start, Pineapple, yellow apples and banana. Reminds me of a fire roasted pineapple even. Vanilla, Honeysuckle and white peach nose as well. M acidity and M+ Body.

Not over the top, but still done in the California style.

  • 2014 Seebass Vineyards Chardonnay Grand Reserve Seebass

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

Lighter than the Patz & Hall. Once again Banana and a Bruised apple note right of the nose. Yogurt, pineapple and almost a cinnamon note also. This was drinking nicer than the Patz & Hall today, but I believe the Patz will hold on better in the next 5+ years. Both were very pleasant Chardonnay's, and that is coming from somebody that is usually not a fan of Chardonnay!

Closing

Hard to pick a favorite because these wines were so different! I loved the Argile because it was so different, but none of the wines were bad, and it really depends on what your preference is. Often at the end of the event 5/6 people pick the same wine as their favorite, tonight almost everybody picked a different wine. Showed how different the same grape can be depending on where it's grown.
