Introduction

New Zealand and Australian wines.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2014 Mount Edward Riesling 88 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

    Screw-cap. Popped and poured.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Thin legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of flinty stony minerality and citrus lime. Youthful.
On the palate, off-dry, medium- alcohol (11.9%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, flint and chalk minerality. Medium finish.
Good quality. Very much a New World Riesling trying very hard to be a Old World. On the austere side of things in terms of complexity. Minerality dominates here. Drink and enjoy over next 2-3 years. Not for long ageing.
Blended from the L’Atitude and Serendipity vineyards in Central Otago.
Whole bunch pressed. Fermentation in a mixture stainless steel barrels and tanks, using wild yeast and minimal temperature control. Aged on lees for 3 months.

  • 2015 Spy Valley Gewürztraminer 89 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    Screw-cap. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, yellow lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of lychee, rambutan, ginger, floral rosewater, exotic spices. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, medium- acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), medium+ body. Medium+ flaovur intensity, with flavours of ripe pin peaches, apricots, lychees, rambutan, gingery spices. Medium finish.
Good quality. Very varietally correct expression, without the heavy oiliness and over-richness it can be prone to. Enjoyable Gewurztraminer. Drink young and fresh over next 1 year. Not for ageing.
From the Johnson Vineyard in Waihopai Valley in Marlborough.
Long ferments in oak and stainless steel vessels, and extended time on lees.

  • 2013 Teusner Mataro The Dog Strangler 88 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Screw-cap. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of vanilla, milk choocolate, fresh brambly red berries, red plums, slight emerging earth and some floral rose. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), smooth high tannins, full body,. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red plums, brambly red berries, sweet vanilla oak, chocolate. Long finish.
Rather disappointed as this is not as good as I remember the 2012 vintage of this was. This one seems to have the fruit somewhat diluted and the strong oak being used to cover up the inadequacies. Overall still a good effort for Mouvedre nonetheless. Wonder if a few years age could integrate the oak and if gamey meat might emerge.

  • 2002 Elderton Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Single Vineyard 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Popped and poured. Drank over 2 hours.

Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of spicy bell peppers, grilled capsicums, blackcurrant, blackberries, tobacco leaf. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), chewy high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of leafy tobacco, grilled capsicums, sweet bell peppers, eucalyptus, mint, blackcurrant, blackberries. Long finish.
Very good quality. Nice aged Cabernet Sauvignon. Pyrazines but not obnoxious, and actually somewhat flattering and complimentary. Time to drink up and enjoy. Not for further ageing.

  • 2013 Hentley Farm Riesling The Noble Exception Eden Valley 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Screw cap. Popped and poured. 375ml bottle.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Legs.
Nose pronounced intensity, with aromas of petroleum, kerosene, citrus lime. Youthful.
On the palate, sweet, medium+ acidity, low alcohol (10%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of chrysanthemum, honey, citrus lime, oily petroleum. Medium finish.
Acceptable quality sweet wine. But where is the Botrytis as advertised on the label?? Petroleum a tad overwhelming, and not enough acidity to balance. Otherwise, an okay drink if you ain't fussy like me.
