  • 2016 Weiser-Künstler Riesling Wolfer Sonnenlay Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

#03-17, 7.5% abv. This is pretty much unchanged from my last note: youthful, crisp, and taut. The nose shows a little bit of sponti, and some of that young wine smell (not surprising, really). The palate has a bit of honeyed sweetness, but the balance here is quite nice. It certainly still has the bracing acidity of riesling, but this is more rounded than the 2015 (Ellergrub).

  • 2012 Patient Cottat Sancerre Anciennes Vignes 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Super grassy on the nose, but the palate has a bit more roundness that sort of protects against too many green flavours. There's nice acidity and minerality here, as well as some of the attendant kiwi and gooseberry flavours (thankfully not much cat pee here). Classic bistro-style sauvignon.

  • 2016 Sigalas Assyrtiko Santorini 90 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

Slightly reductive on the nose, the way a volcanic wine tends to be, but there is a really nice aromaticity here. Fairly extracted and rich on the palate, but some greenness and acidity here in the form of green apple and a touch of grassy herbaceousness. Not waxy, but definitely a fuller-bodied white wine.

  • 2015 Planeta Etna Bianco 85 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

Definitely some volcanic reduction here. There's some perceived sweetness from some floral tones that seem to evoke honey (but there's no sweetness at all). Waxy on the palate, but there is some nice acidity here to give this cut. There's no sign of oak, despite the back label stating that this was partially fermented in barrique.

  • 2015 Momo Sauvignon Blanc 88 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Slightly grassy on the nose, and not too much of the nasty green flavours -- this is more gooseberry and kiwi than cat pee. The palate is a bit bracing, so green it feels almost a bit tannic, but acidic greenness and crystalline quality here makes this quite easy to quaff.

  • 2007 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva 88 Points

    Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG

For such a large-scaled wine, I have to say that I enjoyed this quite a bit. The nose and palate are both large scaled, with copious black fruit all over. There's a bit of funkiness on the nose as well that I couldn't place -- perhaps it was a mild touch of reduction? There's a bit of ash in this wine that I think keeps this from being a generic fruit bomb. I'd certainly be interested in seeing how these wines age, though I'm pretty sure I've used up my Taurasi quota for the year already.

  • 2012 Stony Brook The Max 88 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley

The nose here is fairly high-toned, showing a moderate touch of oak, as well as a really dense dustiness that I would more associate with something like St. Julien. A bit of restrained black fruit and leather here, with a lightness that I enjoy in a Bordeaux blend. At the end of the day, despite the touch of oak, this is a really old-school style that really fits the mold of what I'm looking for in Bordeaux.
