Enjoyable, and probably at the right place to drink at the moment. The nose was certainly more Australia than Rhone, with ripe blackberries and compote fringed with violet florals and peppery spice, with just a little twist of eucalyptus at the edge of bouquet. It wore its 14% alcohol really well on the palate, with a fine enough balance and freshness so one hardly noticed the alcohol. Nice flavours too, with a pure spectrum of crunchy blue and black fruit seasoned with more peppery spice on the midpalate. The finish was more mid-length than long, but otherwise a very pleasant wine that was drinking nicely at the moment.
Excellent - this was a bit riper than my usual tastes, and certainly too young, but boy was it ever good. It had a beautiful nose of nectar, white peaches, chamomile and elderflowers, and just that tiny kiss of mineral that started growing with time. As it warmed up, some inflections of sweet cream and brighter citrus peel emerged as we. The palate had that melting balance that I like in the best Nahe wines, both soft and lively at the same time, with fresh, juicy flavours of peach and nectarine drizzled with a little bit of orange blossom honey. Towards the finish, a touch of sweeter dried apricot came out alongside a nice drift of lemon pips and a slowly emerging minerality. This can go on for decades, and probably needs at least another 8-10 years in the bottle, but it was nevertheless a pleasure even on the night. Very good indeed.
