Introduction

Thanks to Jamie for the invite. Terrific evening of food, wine and friends.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1997 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne Domaine du Duc de Magenta 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Opened from IWFSC cellar -- apparently 7 bottles were opened to get 3 correct bottles for dinner service. This bottle had a gorgeous, mature nose of bruised apple, honey, mineral and melted caramels. Round and plush in the mouth with good depth. Missing some acidity, so it's a bit flat in the finish. No sense in holding these any longer.

  • 2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Opened from IWFSC cellar -- about a 50% failure rate to get a few sound bottles for this dinner. Moderate nose is still quite young with crisp white fruits and flint. With air the nose adds some richness and depth. Very crisp white fruit on the palate, with plenty of zingy acidity. Quite youthful and bracing. Seems like it needs time, but who can deal with the ticking time bomb of pre-mox?

  • 1990 Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Opened from IWFSC cellar. A full nose of earthy red cherry and cooked mushroom. The palate is leaner with lots of earth, soil and dirt intermixed with light red cherry. This is lean throughout but particularly thin in the finish. Past prime and not particularly Gevrey any longer.

  • 1990 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Opened from IWFSC cellar -- gorgeous nose that has still has abundant ripeness, richness and sweetness in the black cherry aromas along with spice accents. The palate is round with some, but clearly fading, richness. Nice lift and meaty spice in the finish. Drinking nicely for a 25+ year old Village wine. Drink now.

  • 1990 Château Angélus 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Opened from IWFSC cellar. Majestic wow nose of rich, ripe plum with great bell pepper, cigar and cocoa notes. Epically rich and youthful aromas. The palate follows suit, with beautifully lush and rich fruit that is so lifted and precise. This is incredibly muscular and powerful, yet feminine. Hammer in velvet glove type of wine. This is incredible now, but should only get better over the next 10+ years.

  • 1966 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Opened from IWFSC cellar. I don't drink a ton of Port, but bottles like this make me regret that. Beautiful, explosive nose of fig and spice is so rich, dense and layered. The palate is rich and unctuous with great brightness. Silky and so smooth and fresh. Toffee, caramel and fig. Yum.
