Introduction

Despite being a bit under the weather, I just couldn't say no to what turned out to be a spectacular evening of fun. HDH Burgundy auction brought into town some high end collectors and great peeps from DC and Orlando. Rich, Alan and me joined them for some pure fun.

RPM did a great job and Kyle and Richard were in top form. When asked if we caused any disruption we were told absolutely not especially compared to the guy a table who over dropped his pants and was asked to leave. The amazing thing is our table was so focused on the wines, we didn't even notice.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Served a tad too warm for my taste, but it did highlight a lot of pretty nuances. A very clean mineral driven wine with wet stony appeal. Deep and highly concentrated, yet remains very focused and precise with near perfect balance. Stunning.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Nice delicate aromas of richer white fruits and some baking spices. On the palate, firm and a bit compacted, but does offer up a beautiful flavor profile with a chewy texture. A bit lean and steely for my palate, however this does show real breed.

  • 2007 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Very aromatically rich and showing lots of ripe fruit with hints a roasted nuts. Flavor profile is ripe and dense with almost a lush quality to the fresh apple, peach, and pears. Loads of minerals and purity. A wow wine, that makes you say yum. An impressive village wine to say the least.

  • 2011 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Very impressive. Aromas of sweet lemon, slate, and a pretty floral streak that opens on the palate to dense rich and tremendously pure fruit flavors. Well integrated underlying sweetness, stony minerals, and a long interesting clean finish. A wow wine.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1989 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark sweet intense aromas of wild blackberries, charred earth and loads of spices. Rich and dense pure black fruit flavors with loads of spicy earthy minerality. This wine is simply stuffed with all things good, yet remains in perfect harmony. A long finish with a zippy edge. The reason Rousseau prices have surged.

  • 1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Wow. My kind of Burgundy. A packed blackberry fruit driven aroma with animal, and scorched earth elements. Concentrated and beautifully pure on the palate with silky smooth textures and delicate black mineral spices. Wonderful underlying sweetness to the riper fruits, but sleek and seamless too. For me, entering its prime hedonistic drinking window where loads of up front fruit, yet balanced and complex.

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Decanted for about 1-2 hours. Firm, large scale wine with dense black fruits. Loads of potential here, but comes across quite young and almost a bit closed. Especially true next to its older siblings on this night. Suggest sitting on this for another 5 years based on this bottle to get more subtle complexities. Still a very regal drink even today.

Closing

We began at 7pm and left after 1am, guess that may be the best indicator of how tremendous these wines were drinking.

Clearly proved why these wines are so special and sought after despite prices that don't seem to make any real logical sense, until you actually taste them.

Not one hurt bottle on this night, very special indeed.
