Burghound Symposium Asia - Gevrey Chambertin Clos St.Jacques 1er Cru Masterclass

Introduction
This Masterclass was part of the 2018 Burghound Symposium curated by Alan “Burghound” Meadows staged by the Hong Kong fine wine merchant “The Fine Wine Experience”. Alan took us through in an impressive level of detail and insight on the intricacies of these two great Morey Saint-Denis Grand Grus. Unfortunately the 2011 vintage and the 2008 are not among the greatest. 2011 was a bit light but overall nice tho drink, even though the real peaks were missing. 2008 was on the sour, rustic side, difficult wines. As for the producer, the following can be noted:
- Esmonin: Lots of whole cluster, half way robust/elegant
- Bruno Clair: Robust style, needs food
- Jadot: Also a structured style, ages well
- Fourrier: All about elegance, light and airy palate
- Rousseau: Little new oak, elegant, more structure than Fourrier. Very high price for this wine as it is considered even better than the lesser Grand Crus of Armand Rousseau’s wines. In today's tasting this super quality could not be found though
2011 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 93 Points

Primary nose, blue fruit, prunes, relatively simple for a CSJ. Spicy palate, sour, subtle. Tannins emerge at the finish

Nose of dark fruit, leaner, spicy palate, acidic, very little pleasure like so many 2008.

Darker, deeper nose than Esmonin just next to it. Lovely palate, sour cherry, plum, good structure and minerality. Very correct.

Nose of blue and dark fruit, spices. The palate also shows the rusticity of the 2008 vintage. With food.

2011 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 94 Points

Closed nose, deeper, darker palate, punchy tannins, a touch sour and tannic on the finish preventing a higher score, (93 pts). Post script: Had the wine again blind 6 months later and it showed better. Especially the complexity was impressive and the palate felt more integrated (94+pts).

The longer this wine sat in the glass the better it was and in the end it snatched the crown at this tasting of many ok but not really great wines. Nose of dark fruit, plum, earthy. Structured palate but there is lots of great sour cherry that accompanies the tannins. Lovely, fruity finish. Early drinking window, decant or wait till 2023. 94+

2011 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 94 Points

Nose of red fruit, bread, spices. Complex. Soft, ripe palate, polished tannins, cherry. raspberry candy. This is very good but the much cheaper Combe aux Moines is just as nice. For Fourrier fans I recommend to try the later as it is always sublime. Second best wine of this tasting with many mediocre wines. 94-95

Nose of dark fruit, spices, lovely. The palate was overly sour, it recovered a bit with time but given the price of the Fourrier CSJ, I would not bet on this bottle, better try the 2011 if you want to buy a cheaper vintage.

Closed nose, dark and red fruit, a bit brooding for a 2011. The palate is lovely though, good structure and aromas. Hard to judge. This will probably add a point when in full bloom. 94-95

Nose of dark fruit, lots of earthy and spicy notes here as well, rip plum as well. The palate is very structure, true to 2008, good but I would like to see some more generosity for a higher score.
