Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2016 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 88 Points

    Germany, Nahe

    (blind)
Medium minus straw. Color has a tinge of gold - possibly botrytis but I don't get it on the nose.
    40g RS.
Elevated intensity aromatics of ripe lemon, faint soapy terpenes, slight candied lime.
On the palate, medium sweet - 40g RS, some warmthr - 9% alcohol, high acid (balance of malic and tartaric), medium plus finish.

The elevated RS and terpenic, slightly reductive-leaning nose point towards Riesling. The reduced alcohol suggests German riesling.

    2016 Kabinett halbtrocken, mosel. ]

Actually: 2016 Donnhoff Riesling Spätlese Niederhauser Hermannshohle Nahe
    65-70g.

Very nice example - maybe a lighter Spatlese.

  • 2016 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    (non-blind - my wine)
    Medium minus gold color.
Medium intensity nose - wet burnt toast (oxidative and waxy), stewed apricot (stone fruit). It has a savory chenin funk - savory oxidized-reductive-peach-wool.
A hint of RS - I'd guess 5g (since I know it's 3-5). 13% alcohol, high acid, long finish of mostly non-fruit - wax, burnt wax, singed wool. slight reduction - hint of struck match.
Very nice integration and a long finish.

  • 2016 Cave de Ribeauvillé Riesling Vendanges Manuelles 84 Points

    France, Alsace

    (non-blind - I accidentally saw it's alsace)
    Medium yellow color.
    7g RS.
Medium intensity nose - faded underripe peach, some wax, slight petrol, brown lemon - this is tired on the nose and a bit disjointed.
On the palate, around 7g RS, 12.5% alcohol, high acid (very strong!), medium minus length - the citrus evaporates and there aren't clearly etched terpenes.

I know it's Alsace, but I might confuse this for
    - German GG - would be cleaner
    - Austrian Federspiel - wouldn't have as searing acid.
    - Alsace AOP - fits.

Final call: 2014 Alsace AOP Riesling.
Actually 2016 Cave de Ribeauville Vendange manuelles
