France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Lovely medium-plus intensity aromatics, superb Asian spice, rose floral, ridiculous nose; palate is light bodied, high acid, fruit doesn’t quite live up to the acid, medium alcohol, medium finish. The nose is a strength here. Drink now. 90-91
On pouring, thought this was corked. Funky at first, it blew off with 1-2 hours of air. Jammy black fruit, slight spice, still slight funk; palate is medium bodied, blackberry, ripe fruit, high high acid, medium to medium-plus alcohol; finish is medium length and clean. Much better than when first opened. Day 2: Half bottle was left, and today again it smells like a little TCA. It may not be (others at the dinner thought it wasn't), but at least it's funky in a way I don't love.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
A bit closed and cold, but an underlying core of red fruit, spice; palate is light-medium bodied, good density, medium-plus acid, closed fruit on the palate. This seems like it needs more time. 88 This opened up a lot with an hour of air. Now deep complex aromatics, excellent balance. Still young, but showing well. 90-91
High intensity aromatics, ripe apples, apple skin; palate is medium-bodied, rich, but still has fresh vibrant acidity; medium-plus finish. Really nice, but more oxidative than my last taste. 93
Incredible aromatics, peach, lemon-lime, salinity; palate is dry, white fruit that fades through the midpalate, medium richness; clean minerality on the finish. Lovely wine, but I do like just a touch of sweetness for more complexity on the palate. 90
Highly aromatic, tar, roses, classic nose, red fruit; palate is light bodied, high tannins but drinkable, high acid; medium-long finish. Classic in every way, and surprisingly approachable now. 93
Red fruit, cherries, slight VA, slightly sweet; palate is light bodied, high tannins are slightly noticeable, youthful; medium-plus finish. 92+, young.
Deep red to black fruit, slight spice, youthful, dense; palate is light-medium bodied, more black fruit, high youthful tannins, high acid; medium to medium-plus finish. A bit richer than the others. The 1998 wins it for me. 91-92
From a 375. Orange-golden, atypically dark; aromatic, orange zest, saffron, spice, apricot; full bodied, high sweetness, medium-plus acidity, alcohol is a bit higher than desired (14%); clean medium finish. Good, still young, and shows a bit of excess ripeness right now. 89-90
