Introduction

As every year Achim's Magnum Tasting at Berens am Kai.
This time 14 people at 14.12.2018 met ad 14:12.
All the wines were great, interesting flights, only two corked bottles. Great food, nice friends and a perfect service as always. Thanks Achim for organisation and Tobi for helping out with a great bottle.

Flight 1 - Champagne Start (2 Notes)

Krug at his best and the 2000 at his peak

  • NV Pierre Morlet Champagne Premier Cru Grand Reserve 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (12/24/2018)

    From magnum, blind
Never heard and drank before. A little bit harsh and rustic, PN and PM dominated in nose and palate. Missing the balance from mid to late palate. Bread crust, red apple and citrus. 90-91

  • 2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    (12/24/2018)

    From magnum, not blind
The nose and palate refelects the typical Krug perfume. Fresh baken bread crust, roasted hazelnuts, lime. Everything in shape and balance. The best 2000 Krug I had so far. Reaching his peak. Crazy acidity for the vintage. 95-96

Flight 2 - White wine (2 Notes)

The Idig one of the best Idig's I had. Pale yellow, nicely riped still citrus dominated. 96-97

  • 2002 A. Christmann Konigsbacher Idig Riesling Großes Gewächs 96 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    (12/24/2018)

    Magnum, not blind
Phantastic aged Riesling from Pfalz. I'm not a big fan of this site. Many drinkers say Idig needs a lot of time. Most of the bottles I had were unbalanced or with too ripe fruit but this was a perfect bottle. Pale yellow colour, still primary fruits, tangerine, saline, refreshing and with a long clean finish. From this size at least 5-8 more years. 96-97

  • 2013 Morlet Family Vineyards Chardonnay Coup de Coeur 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (12/24/2018)

    Magnum, not blind
Compared to the Idig 2002 Magnum you had a completely different wine. maybe stylewise I prefer the Riesling for me too much oak, vanilla and secondary notes. The fruit is in the background and it is too much power dominated from the oak. Maybe everything will be integrated in a few years but I don't think so. I had the feeling that they tried to make a great wine but sometimes less is more. 92+

Flight 3 - 1964 Bordeaux (2 Notes)

  • 1964 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (12/24/2018)

    From magnum, not blind
Some participants discussed about cork. For me not, but for TCA I'm not so sensitive. But the wine was getting and better after hours so it was still a great joy to drink this wine. Typical Pauillac. Missing the length for a huge wine. Never had it before so I don't know how it could be. 93

  • 1964 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (12/24/2018)

    From magnum, not blind
Distinctly winner over the Latour in same flight.
Milk chocolate, caramell, spicy, white pepper, silky tannins, great balance, at his peak, refreshing acidity, smooth long finish. 96

Flight 4 (1 Note)

I was suprised fromthis vintage

  • 1971 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (12/24/2018)

    Magnum, not blind
I was suprised, so much density, length and complexity. Black currant, cedarwood, strong tannin structure, killing acidity. One of the besz wines of the evening. 98-99

Flight 5 - Californian flight (2 Notes)

Flight 6 - 1978 flight Bx vs Cal (2 Notes)

For many drinkers a 200 point flight

  • 1978 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (12/24/2018)

    From Magnum, not blind
For many drinkers together with Martha's Vineyard 1978 200 points. I was not that "high". The 1978 is the bigger wine compared to the LMHB 1971 but for me the older one brought more fun at that day. Anyway from Mg not at his peak. 98(99)

  • 1978 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 99 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    (12/24/2018)

    From Magnum, not blind
Great flight with LMHB same vintage. I preferred the Californian. Almost as strong as the legendary 1974. Coke, eucalyptus, mint, cassis, balanced, at his peak, but no hurry. 98-99

Flight 7 - 1983 Bx Margaux flight (2 Notes)

The fllight of the evening for me

  • 1983 Château Margaux 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    (12/24/2018)

    From Magnum, not blind
Margaux 1983 did it again. Everything is at the right place. Maybe not so "accessible" as the Palmer 83 but so silky and graceful. Cassis, tobacco leaves, still too young, at least 20 more years ahead. 99

  • 1983 Château Palmer 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    (12/24/2018)

    From Magnum, not blind
A giant flight together with Margaux 1983, great tannin and acidity , structure, balanced, maybe a hint more accessible than the Margaux. 98+

Flight 8 (2 Notes)

Lafleur corked, 86 DMG

  • 1971 Château Lafleur Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (12/24/2018)

    Magnum, corked, damn

  • 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (12/24/2018)

    From double magnum, not blind,
Instead of the corked Lafleur 1971 Georg brought as a table wine a DMG of Lafite 1986.
Very closed in this stage even it was decanted for three hours, a lot of acidity but less fruit, shy and missing balance. From regular bottle much more accessible at the moment. 95++

Flight 9 - 1992 cali (2 Notes)

Both not in perfect shape

Flight 10 (2 Notes)

My WOTN Jacques Perrin

Flight 11 - 2000 Giants (2 Notes)

Both too young but in a fun stage

  • 2000 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (12/26/2018)

    From magnum, not blind
Baby stage but great fruit expression with ripe and firm tannins. After three hours of decantation still very compact and closed. 96 (98)

  • 2000 Château Cheval Blanc 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (12/26/2018)

So fresh and young, red currant, smoky and fine tannins. Phantastic to drink now 97(99). I preferred to the LMHB 2000.

My top 5

Beaucastel 07 Hommage Jacques Perrin
Margaux 83
Heitz Martha 78
LMHB 1971
Palmer 83

The Jacques Perrin was the most emotional bottle of the evening for me. A perfect wine. The 83s coming close to their peak, suprised from 71 LMHB. 78 Martha not really worse than 74. The 2000's are ages to young but very accessible. Hopefully next year again
