Introduction

The 2nd Sunday group gathered for our regular double blind tasting. For this group, we are presented a couple of double blind warm ups before the main flight. The warm ups are discussed & unveiled before moving on to the host's themed main flight. We spend forty five minutes or so tasting and evaluating the eight wines for the main flight before ranking the wines and then making guesses as to what we were tasting. Wines are ranked 1-8, one point for each place, and then unveiled from last place to first place. After the tasting, dinner is served with the additional wines brought by the group, nonblind. For this tasting we had twelve tasters and the cost was $30.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Themed flight (8 Notes)

  • 2014 Ferrer Bobet Priorat Vinyes Velles 90 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Deep color. Cassis and blackberry fruit gives way to blueberry jam, florals and red berry. Firm and tannic. Black fruit, hints of brown sugar, turning towards red fruit as it opens. The fruit comes out the longer this sits, seems more balanced and thus more likable as it opens.

  • 2014 Clos Figueras Priorat Clos Figueres 88 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Black fruit and brown sugar aromas. Firm tannins. Plummy dark fruit turns more jammy as it sits. Picks up a tart grapefruit note with air. Dark fruit on the palate with nice acidity. Medium finish.

  • 2016 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat Garnatxa 89 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Opens with a touch of weedy funk, followed by candied notes and strawberry jam. Candied berry fruit on the palate; not as tannic as the first couple of wines. Less candied as it sits. Nice earthy overtones are much less vegetal/weedy- I like it, and there's nice raspberry and red fruit on the palate.

  • 2016 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Les Terrasses Laderas de Pizarra 88 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Dark fruit with stemmy/woody overtones. Tannic; firm. Flavors of dark fruit and also that stemmy quality from the bouquet. Astringent on the finish. Becomes more perfumed and floral as it opens, along with vanilla and dark fruit on the palate. Remains slightly astringent.

  • 2016 Celler Vall Llach Priorat Embruix 87 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Plum and dark fruit notes to open. The palate shows dark fruit, wood and spice with an astringent finish, much like the previous wine. Doesn't change much- somewhat generic/boring.

  • 2015 Costers del Priorat Petit Pissarres 91 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Opens with dark fruit and plum with a nice earthy/forest floor overtone. Tannic; slightly astringent with abundant dark fruit and spice. Opens nicely in the glass- dark fruit, tobacco and forest floor. More fruit and no astringency- finishes with nice length.

  • 2010 Celler Vall Llach Priorat Porrera Vi de Vila 85 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Double blind. Opens with a weedy, vegetal quaity, fading to black fruit, perhaps cassis. A bit of spice here too. Tannic. Shows a fair amount of alcoholic heat. Dark fruit fades on the palate, turning austere and tannic through the finish. Others liked this- I guess it's just not my cup of tea.
