Introduction

A really fun night that started out with everyone going around and trying the "Nez Du Vin" kit that Mo is using to train his nose into tip-top shape. It was kind of funny how bad we were at it, personally I got one right.

On to the wines...

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Found this wine to be elegant with a nice soft nose of hay and sweet cherries with a nice persistent finish. Stood up admirably to the Aussie bruisers we had on the table along side it.

  • 2003 Mitolo Shiraz Reiver 97 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Tasted along side the 2001 Greenock Alice's, this wine really shone and just edged it out by a hair. A big nose of black currants, smoke and anise that was constantly evolving throughout the night. One minute taking on scents of blueberries and vanilla, the next a meaty pork fat aroma. Just stunning wine with a long 70 second finish. One of the best wines I've had the pleasure of consuming.

  • 2001 Greenock Creek Shiraz Alices 96 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Absolutely enormous nose of licorice, grilled meat, blackberries and tobacco. In the mouth, it has unreal balance, terrific fruit and not a touch of heat and a 60+ second finish. This wine's a knockout and will only continue to get better.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • NV Yalumba Muscat Museum Reserve Rutherglen 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen

Nice end to the night, this wine is right up there with Chambers for my favorite Aussie dessert wines. Lots of caramel, dates, figs with this faint but consistent presence of orange on the nose and palate. Really nice dessert wine, lingers on the palate for a long time.

Closing

Wine of the night for me in the end was the Reiver but it flip-flopped back and forth a couple of times throughout the night. I think these were the two best Aussie shiraz I've ever had, they were really stunning for me.
