Introduction

First time attending this interesting event of duty free retailer DFS. A fairly strong bias towards super high end whiskies, interesting to try but drink very rarely spirits so cannot fully appreciate.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 Notes)

Very generous free flow of two excellent Champagnes

  • 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Incredibly crisp and fresh for a 17 year old Champagne, the great 02 vintage obviously showing, a touch of brioche, great minerality, preferred this to the fruitier and rounder 2008 Dom Perignon served next to it.

  • 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Fairly rich white fruit, round with great balance already. Very enjoyable to drink - still I slightly preferred the minerality and clarity of the 2002 Piper Heidsieck Cuvee Rare served next to it.

Flight 2 - High end whiskies (4 Notes)

Interesting to try those 40 year old releases but am not a whisky drinker so a bit of a waste...

Flight 3 - Barons de Rothschild master class / portfolio tasting (6 Notes)

  • 2015 Moulin de Duhart 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Light and easy drinking with fruits more in the red spectrum. Tannins not noticeable. Short finish. A wine to drink over the next couple of year, would invest the money rather into the 2015 Grand Vin of one of the many less well known names in Bordeaux.

  • 2015 Blason de l'Evangile 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Just like the second wine of Duhart Milon, I found this also somewhat disappointing. Lacks depth and structure, despite the great vintage. Better value elsewhere.

  • 2008 Château Duhart-Milon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Clearly darker with more meat than the second wine. Good balance, some soil, dark fruit, fine to medium tannis. Short to medium length. A solid Pauillac but nothing exceptional. Might have benefited from a longer decant in my eyes.

  • 2008 Château L'Evangile 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very good showing in this master class. Rich and round dark fruit, the Merlot is clearly coming through, tannins integrated, medium length.

  • 2010 Carruades de Lafite 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A very masculine Carruades, this is 42% Merlot but the Cab Sauv is very dominant in this vintage. Solid structure, rich dark fruit, this needs an extensive decant or more time in the cellar.

  • 2008 Château Lafite Rothschild 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very elegant and nicely balanced. A touch of oak, dark fruit, much rounder than the 2010 Carruades but also with the right structure supporting, some pencil lead. This also needed more than the 1h decant the wine was given initially, a second small glass about 30 min later was showing already much better.
