Introduction

One year ago today CellarTracker officially departed 'beta' and users were able to sign up on their own for the very first time. At the time the site had about 150 beta users and 60,000 bottles in inventory. Now, a year later we just crossed 6,000 users and 750,000 bottles in inventory. It has been amazing to see the growth and the enthusiasm which have far exceeded my expectations.

To celebrate, I invited a few locals (Jeff Fisher, Adam Noble, and Roy Hersh) over to enjoy a couple of my favorite wines.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Such a champagne. I really need to lay off of these, but they are just so delicious. This bottle showed a little more smoke and vanilla than prior bottles, but as it warmed there was a hint of yeastiness amidst the expressive nose. The palate is broad and vinous, loaded with explosive, smoky minerals and rich citrus fruits. This is such a beast of a young champagne, very enjoyable and special.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Poyferré 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

I love this wine which is both mature and youthful at the same time. The nose is extremely expressive with leather, graphite, lead pencil, espresso, cocoa and a hint of mint. The palate was very tight at first, showing lots of clamping acidity and red fruit. However, with 45 minutes of air this opened beautifully and showed the gorgeous "rocks and red fruit" which I associate with Poyferré, but there is also a depth of more roasted, black fruit and dusty, powerful tannins. The graphite and minerality is amazing, and with time some cedar also joins the party. This bottle was more youthfully tannic than other bottles I have had, showing lots of structure and minerality and a bit less fruit. Still, this is a delicious wine which always delivers!
