  • 1999 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

This was a lovely bottle maturing but still taut. The nose offered up very precise notes of mineral, beeswax and pollen while the palate offered a serrated charater alternating tight almost abrasive moments ofquartzy minerality with round lulls of viscous richness featuring ripe yellow fruits cut with juicy acidity. Almost chewy this has grand cru depth and looks like it will be spectacular around 2010-2018

  • 1998 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

More complex than the Pernot but without the sheer breed this offers up crushed mineral, banana peel and jammy hints of golden raspberry on the nose with subtle accents of smoke and parchment. Still with a touch of raw wood on the nose and palate this is richly fruited and bright with excellent intensity in the mouth if a touch loose in comparison to the Pernot.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Saint Véran Domaine de la Chapelle aux Loups 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Saint Véran

This turns decidely more fruited than the previous whites with it lemon curd and oaken spice nose. lean and focused in the mouth with just a touch of creaminess to the restrained yet pure fruit. Lovely if a bit short and suffering in comparison to the previous pair of wines

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

This is showing fully mature and complete with a floral nose with zesty, almost tropical fruit notes turning more typically old apply with time in the glass and revealing hints of almond, lemon creme and cooked evaporated milk. lean and sinewy in the mouth without much depth across the midpalate revealing some mineraly gravelly notes that lead to a medium length finish with solid yet undistinguished flavors.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1988 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

The nose here is very heavily marked by brett with it's characteristic bandaid, leather, and mussel shell notes. None the less this has a great entry with focus and a wonderfully light crispness to the texture. Showing wonderful maturity and integration this is texturally a joy to drink with dark cherry fanning out across the palate leading to a finish that is clipped by the brett. The entry offers a lovely bittersweet character and great precision so if one focuses on that this wine sings but the brett brings it down a notch for me

  • 1990 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Certainly more rustic than the Engel with a nose redolent of clay, earth and a bit of ass. A touch of VA doesn't detract and offers lift to the spice and leather notes. Nicely integrated with good raw materiel, juicy fruit is quite ripe. A backdrop of dark spice, earth and orange rind offers complexities and while there is a touch of tannin to resolve this is mature with gentle spice notes that float above the palate. Lacks a bit of oomph though

  • 1996 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Once the sulfur blows off this is a lovely wine to smell rich with iron, flowers, and wild berry notes that turn towards lingonberry. Complicating scents of smoke, spice and earth fill out the subtle, layered nose and are quite seductive. In the mouth the wine remians quite tight with a very focused, slightly hard core of minerality and drying tannins keeping much under wraps. The finish is very iron rich but stuccato and short with faint echoes of fruit and spice. leave this alone for 5-6 years

  • 1999 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

This is decidely much riper ans oakier than the preceding wines with pronounced smells of breakfast, raspberry jam, toast and butter, which i prefer at breakfast. Woody and spicy with jammy and powdered sugar notes on the nose this is very clean, cool, and fresh in the mouth with great intensity and purity to it's reds fruits that offer hints of bright spices on it's edges. Solid acidity adds verve though the wine remains a bit rigid it does offer excellent length and a luxurious roundness in the mouth. This is very promising for 2010-2020

  • 1991 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Lovely nose here with notes of underbrush and herbs contrasting the hightoned notes of dark fruit and spice reminding of anise. lean and taut in the mouth yet ripe if note opulent. in fact with time a touch of astringency mars the otherwise attractive spice rich midpalate with it's very pure cherry and cherry pit fruit. the finish is subtle, short and strict. This requires time to tame the structure but I am skeptical about the wines balance ever improving and dont feel enough depth of fruit to give me any long term confidence for cellaring. Enjoy these over the shorter term 2008-2011

  • 1993 Louis Jadot Clos St. Denis 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

This was quite a complete bottle with it's beguiling nose offering up intriguing citrus and menthol notes that slowly morphed into very primary gooseberry and huckleberry notes. Integrated and round in the mouth this is richly fruited with dark berry notes supported by solid acidity and lots of ripe tannins lurking. Long finish of sour cherry, raspberry and strawberry with stunning purity and sneaky length this really shines on the finish leading me to think that this can only improve and will by breathtaking with it's zesty berry fruit full revealed but even at this stage there is lovely bottle sweetness. Drink this anytime from 2008-2020

  • 1995 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Following theClos St. Denis was difficult but this worked well offering up a more feral nose with musky undertones and notes of cedar, menthol, herbs, and cherry in a restrained, reserved package. Big and rich in the mouth with the acidity poking out a bit though this is particularly chewy at this stage so it's not terribly obvious. Lots of tannins to resolve though there is a core of succulent fruit that is on the smoky, tarry side of the spectrum. The finish offers a view to the purity of cherry fruit here though this wine really deserves additional cellaring. 2011-2020

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Echezeaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

This was a step down from the previous wine and a bit unusual. Offering up more orchard fruit than berries with notes of apricot and hints of bretty leather if remaining fresh and youthful. Big and rich in the mouth with punchy fruit leading to a vibrant, mineraly finish this was enjoyable for it's fleshy fruit if a touch monolithic though coming last didn't help much

Flight 7 (1 Note)

  • 1995 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

This ws richly botrytised with lovely honied and apricot notes on the nose as well as an insinuation of orgeat. Fresh on the palate with tons of apricot, honey and spice all supported with solid acdity. Adding complexity with air the nose turns a bit redder with hints of strawberry jam and the palate hints of butter and caramel on the finish. I already had enough to drink so just sipped this but it offered excellent intensity.
