Flight 1 - Official Tasting from Rhys (9 Notes)

  • 2016 Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Anderson Valley 87 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Tasting, brief note. Crisp apple throughout, ripe on start, then leaner from middle forward. Nicely balanced and easy. Good now.

  • 2016 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Tasting, brief note. Plenty of apple, lemon and lemon tart. Very big and dense, while also incredibly bright. Very good weight and length, this is an impressive New World Chardonnay made in a classic, Old World fashion. So good now, better in a few more years.

  • 2015 Rhys Chardonnay Bearwallow Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Tasting, brief note. Tart apple and lemon with lots of structure, which gives this an off balance character today, but I like the long and expanding finish, which gives me reason for optimism.

  • 2016 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Tasting, brief note. Yellow and green apple on nose and palate with floral notes to start, some spice in finish. Good+ weight and length, slightly firm for now on finish. Some preferred this over Alpine, but I can't come even close to seeing that.

  • 2016 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

Tasting, brief note. Slightly floral with bright red cherry and berry that starts out rounded, then gets leaner towards medium-long finish. Firm now, this needs cellar time, and hopefully it picks up weight.

  • 2016 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Tasting, brief note. Red and black berries start-to-finish with sweet and complex spice, most notably on long finish. This also needs cellar time, but has 92+ point potential.

  • 2013 Rhys Syrah Horseshoe Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Tasting, brief note. Black meaty fruit with chocolate liqueur hints. Medium weight, good+ length. So much here, but also backward and slightly awkward right now.

Flight 2 - A Few Older Bottles from my Cellar (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Home Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

Red cherry and berry with dried herbs, subtle spice and a dollop of earth. Medium density, but so well made with good balance and freshness for such young vines. Bought from winery on release.

  • 2008 Rhys Syrah Skyline Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Black berries with hints of roasted meat and olive tapenade. Good richness, while also showing an Old World structure and style I really enjoyed. Bought on release from winery. Very good now, probably no upside.
