Introduction

Taking advantage of the Farr Vintners summer offer

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

Parmesan crisps and Foccaccia

  • 1996 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 91 Points

    France, Champagne

In a lovely place - restrained by persistent mousse, gorgeous golden colour, nicely rich and oxidised - but lacks the impact or complexity to merit a higher score. Agree with previous reviews that suggest these should be drunk sooner rather than later.

Flight 2 - Starter (1 Note)

Lobster and scallop raviolo with bisque sauce, samphire and chives

  • 2006 Ropiteau Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Came across younger than expected in both appearance and flavour. Classic Meursault, with a broad, oak-influenced nose and a nice balance of fruit and secondary flavours, but not much power or pizzazz. Great match for lobster raviolo though.

Flight 3 - Main (1 Note)

Roast Barbary duck breast with spiced pastilla and pickled cherries

  • 2000 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Just a delicious bottle of wine - consensus WOTN. And yet not a typical Nebbiolo - very full-bodied and viscous, like a Bordeaux from a hot year, albeit with tar and leather rather than cassis and cigar box. Took time to open up - we had around a one hour decant and it continued to improve until the final sip, with increasing sweet cherry fruit towards the end of the glass.

Flight 4 - Pudding (1 Note)

Buttermilk pudding with spiced plum compote, warm hazelnut financiers and yoghurt sorbet

  • 1994 Château Coutet Barsac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

No detailed note - delicious Sauternes, but not much power, and perhaps in a lull between having any youthful pep or any interesting maturity.
