  • 1998 Unison Vineyard Selection 93 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Served double bind as a pair by Rose. Small pour, brief note. I thought the wines a pair of Left Bank Bordeaux. Everyone in the group had this wine as quality Bordeaux, with most similarly siting the other one. The 1998 the better wine of the pair. Under cork. Lighter garnet colour. A nose of herbs, old leather, dust, old cigar box and mainly preserved red fruit. Similar savoury, developed flavours on palate. Nice mouthfeel. Well balanced - not heavy - with good acidity. Very impressive. The product of a an excellent, warm vintage, well handled by the winemaker. At least 10 years ahead of this wine.

  • 2002 Unison Vineyard Selection 91 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Served double bind as a pair by Rose. Small pour, brief note. I thought the wines were a pair of Left Bank Bordeaux, but guessed this wine could have been the Right Bank of the two. One taster suggested this wine might even have been Australian, which seemed possible. Under cork. Deeper, darker colour. Riper, richer bouquet, more blackberries and other dark fruit, some methol and cedar. In the mouth, similar, very dark fruited, flirting with overripeness. Lower acid. The product of a very warm 'Californian vintage' in the Hawke's Bay. It'll also go another 6-8+ years, I'd think.
