Introduction

Marguet Sapience 2009 as aperitif.
Raveneau les Clos 2003 against Kumeu River Hunting Hill 2015
Montrose 1998 against Mouton Rothschild 1998
Rieussec 2014

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2009 Marguet Sapience 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

A little angular in the beginning and also a little reduction on the nose in the beginning. Needs time in the glass to become more rounded. The reduction faded away quickly. As expected an oxidative stylr, lots of apple and nutty

  • 2003 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Bottle in perfect condition. High acidity, a rich wine, stone fruit, toast and a note of butter. Tasted against Kumeu River Hunting Hill 2015. Raveneau is in my opinion Chablis's best producer. However, I must admit, Kumeu River tasted like a Chassagne-Montrachet and was by our extremely experienced guests guessed as such. 12 years younger but also complex and well balanced and maybe a little better than Raveneau ( I gave Kumeu River 94+ and the price is less than a tenth of Raveneau)

  • 1998 Château Montrose 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    91+
Decanted 3½ hours in advance. A little angular, too much cedar (oak) compared to the fruit. The fruit was dried and the wine tasted almost dusty. Not well balanced. clear aromas of green pepper. I am not sure this wine will develop positively because of the missing fruit. Tasted against Mouton Rothschild 1998, which was a lot better, well balanced and with plenty of fruit. Mouton can develop for many many years - I look forward to follow the development for my remaining 5 btls.

  • 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted 3½ hours in advance. It was open and well balanced with plenty of fruit and of course green bell pepper. Beginning tertiary notes like farmyard. That wine can develop for many many years - I look forward to follow the development for my remaining 5 btls.

Closing

The wine of the evening was Mouton Rothschild. Raveneau was a little disapointing proably because of the vintage 2003 which is'nt a good year neither for whites or reds. So much the money when it comes to Kumeu River
