Wine Wizards Monthly Tasting

Wine Wizards Stockton
Tasted Thursday, December 3, 2020 by Woodbridge Brad with 105 views

Introduction

Not the most promising selection of wine but with K Lynch not sipping sample and the avalanche of wine in the system that were destined for the on premise trade we tasted some bargains and a couple of Champagnes that were just the right timing.

Also one of the tasters was finally putting his cellar on CT and like most of us found some forgotten gems that we tasted for history.

Flight 1 - OK Whites (3 Notes)

Flight 2 - So-So Reds (6 Notes)

Flight 3 - Good Sparklers (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - History Wines (3 Notes)

  • NV Delicato Barbera Barberone

    USA, California

Historically interesting case of lemons and lemonade. In 1988 Delicato received grapes labeled Merlot that were really Barbera as a result of a major fraud scheme that when far beyond these particular grapes ( see Bavaro Brothers and Michael J. Licciardi). Anyway the wine was made as inexpensive Merlot and bottled before the fraud was exposed. Wasn't bad wine but to sell it the winery relabeled it as Barberone and non vintage and only sold it in California.

At 30 plus years of age it was decent and still had life and interest, which only goes to show that Barbera should be planted in Lodi area more. We Also tasted a Greenstone Barbera from the same vintage as a comparison.

  • 1988 Greenstone Winery Barbera Limited Release Delta College Vineyard

USA, California, Central Valley, San Joaquin County

Tasted against a Delicato Barberone, this was a fund raiser wine for made from the Delta College Vineyards by Greenstone Winery in Amador County. The wine benefited the Agriculture program at Delta College which serves the Lodi appellation.

It was very sound and again showed the reason so much Babera was planted din the area at one time. Not much is left as the demand for more mainstream varieties up rooted most of it. There a still a hand full of vineyards and wines and they are worth finding. Try St Amant, McCay, LangeTwins, or Heritage Oak of Lodi.

Greenstone Winery, which was/is right over the line from Lodi to Amador morphed into Clos du Lac Cellars many years ago. The Barbera Vineyard was removed some time ago, pity.

  • 1986 Renaissance Late Harvest Riesling

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, North Yuba

The color has maderized but the flavors are still riesling and wine was a balanced and delightful stickie. Fun memory wine.
