  • 2019 Mark Haisma Chambolle-Musigny Les Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

First vintage of this wine. Mark opted to take a smaller quantity of this fruit rather than more from a site further down the slope. East-facing, high and to the north of the village, protected from warm afternoon sun. Low extraction, no new oak, 45% whole bunch.

A very bright appearance, clear and twinkling. Deep but bright, gently floral and slightly smoky, on the nose. Big boom of sour cherry on the palate, very juicy and persistent, some spice coming through. Sweet, unobtrusive tannins and overall really charming and refreshing.

  • 2019 Thibault Liger-Belair Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

A blend of five parcels, around 50% whole bunch.

Much richer, rounder style than #1; dark, balsamic and sultry. A little reticent and astringent, but shows promise. Riper 'rhubarb and custard' fruit and somewhat structured. Silky tannins, pleasing acidity, benefits from air more than the other wines tonight.

  • 2019 Domaine Stephane Magnien Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Les Sentiers has brown and stony soil. Production about 50% down in 2019.

Very pretty aromas. Greater depth and flavour than the village wines. Blackcurrant fruit, verging on pastille. Layered intensity, very persistent. Classy but the flavours are not completely to my taste.

  • 2019 Domaine Arlaud Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Aux Chéseaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

On the north of Morey, next to Mazoyeres. Lots of limestone in the soil and exposed to cooling north winds. Vines just over 40yo.

Quite a deep, dark colour. Gives a lovely, airy, floral, mineral impression on the nose - really enticing. That carries through in the mouth: gorgeous lift, ripe fruit, clean and moreish, a tasty Marmitey depth on the finish. Nice combination of the power of a warm vintage and the aromatics of a cooler one.

  • 2019 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey St. Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Riotte is just below CSD and has deep soil with some clay, so doesn't easily suffer from hydric stress - it did well in '19 and '20. Vines over 60yo, too.

A very generous, fruit-forward style, reliant more on bitterness than acidity for its balance. Laid-back and stuffed full of charming forest fruits. Tannins are gloriously sweet. Very tasty but slightly lacks excitement.

Closing

Certainly a high standard of wines tonight - positive impressions of the vintage for sure.
