Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Mathis Bastian Pinot Gris Domaine et Tradition 88 Points

    Luxembourg, Moselle, Moselle Luxembourgeoise

Wine 1 of 6. Medium yellow-golden and lightly grey-ish colour. Good stone fruit and citrus notes, with lively, acidity and average to good length. Unoaked. Medium- to light-bodied and very fresh. Should make a good aperitif or pair well with lighter sea food dishes like white fish and shellfish.

    United Kingdom, England, Essex

Wine 2 of 6. Medium yellow-golden colour, with some CO2. Fresh citrus notes, green apple, toasty oak and some smoke, with high, sour acidity and good length. Medium-bodied. Burgundy-style. Needs time. At its current stage, it might pair well with oysters. 89+(?)

Citrus, exotic fruit, nice herbaceous notes and a tiny hint of vanilla on the palate, with good acidity, a waxy and oily texture and very good length. Fresh, medium-bodied and very balanced, with perfectly integrated oak. Very pleasant. Good value. I liked it!

  • 2015 Ridge Geyserville 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

Wine 5 of 6. A blend of 70% Zinfandel, 15% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah and 3% Alicante Bouschet. Bright dark ruby colour. Rip and sweet dark fruit, high-class dark chocolate, coconut, mint and spices, with balancing acidity, well-integrated tannin and superb length. Full and sweet, yet round, balanced and very elegant in light of its high alcohol content. Dense, well-structured and very persistent. Perfect for BBQ. I am usually not a fan of Zinfandel, but I liked this 2015 Geyserville quite a bit!

  • 2007 Château Lynch-Bages 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wine 6 of 6. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Dark ruby colour. Smells more mature than one would expect. Complex composition of red and dark fruit, floral notes, soap, spices, bell pepper, vegetal and gamy notes, cedar box, tobacco and mint, with good acidity, partly resolved tannin and good length. The combination of high acidity, unresolved tannin and only moderate fruit concentration makes the wine a little austere.

The 2007 Lynch-Bages has very good complexity and is a good expression of Pauillac. That said, it doesn't have the concentration of better vintages, is a little austere, and doesn't have the stuffing to make old bones. Taking current market price into consideration, a number of alternatives that do not break the bank jump to mind. Drink now and over the next five or six years. 90(-)
