La Trompette, London

Full straw. Nicely rich. Lanolin and wet straw on the nose. Textural density here and a weight that feels more northern rhone. Fresh with a reasonable line. Doesn’t feel as alcoholic as Pav Blanc sometimes can. ****

Mid ruby. Bright and clear. Filigree, pure and chiselled. Fine porcelain. Lots here, invites you in but demands concentration. Intellectual rather than hedonistic beauty. Really very lovely indeed. ****1/2

Richer, meatier and more savoury than the Mugnier Amoureuses alongside. Denser, all velvet as opposed to silk. Plush but very savoury. Two very different wines but both equally lovely. ****1/2

Savoury, dark fruited. Somehow this is a little sullen, recalcitrant even. A fennel top note develops with air. Bar one previous off bottle, this is usually lovely in a richer, dark style, but this bottle isn’t quite there. Still, there’s plenty of good wine here, it’s just not as good as it can be. ***1/2

Classic tobacco and warm gravel nose. Similar on the palate, depth with good acidity. Very classic showing. ****

Gorgeous nose. Lovely richness. Warm terracotta and plum opening up to a more savoury element. Plush fruit with a hint of herbal fragrance. The restrained side of rich. Long and very lovely. ****1/2

Blind, pale to mid straw. Lovely nose, fine, nicely lifted and really quite precise. Similar on the palate, sweet, but balanced by good acidity and the whole thing sitting on a very light frame. Elegant and willowy. Lovely. ****

Richer and somewhat broader than the Zilliken. Nicely sweet with good balancing acidity, but perhaps lacks a little focus in the company. Suspect this would have benefited from a bit more air and attention. ****

Bright mid gold. A clear step up in sweetness from the 95 auslesen alongside. Rich and concentrated with layers of tropical fruit and a citrus cut providing some line and cut on the finish. Really very good indeed. Lingers and lingers. ****1/2

Mag. Served blind. Decanted. Light to mid straw. Vinous. Quite Pinot rich. Rich but mellow and smooth, just the faintest hint of something oxidative starting to develop, but lovely freshness behind the mid palate weight. Very harmonious and smooth. Lovely. Serious wine that would work as an aperitif through to food. Seems ready. ****
