Introduction

I arranged the blind tasting as part of a late birthday celebration for a good friend, D.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Pomologik Hopple 89 Points

    Sweden, Södermanland, Eskilstuna

For the price this is just right. Dry cider with apples and hops but manages to not go into either the overly sweet or juicy apple part of the spectrum, nor the yeasty, beer-like overtones that hops often gives in cider. A real masterpiece actually. One of the best ciders I've had.

  • 2019 Pomologik Ingrid 88 Points

    Sweden, Södermanland, Eskilstuna

Brilliant effort that carries the sweetness, tart, juicy fresh flavors of Ingrid Marie apples, a real premier sort. But still a dry expression with 4,5 % ABV. wonderful.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Lucy Margaux / Domaine Lucci Pinot Noir Out of Control 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Vin nature pinot noir that is a mere 11.5% ABV and with an almost neon pink rosé wine color and lots and lots of freshness. Apple cider vinegar. Red currants. Raspberry sherbet with little or no sugar. Saline finish. In its style its brilliant.

  • 2019 Jauma 1000 Fires 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Fresh and aromatic. Really well done in its style. Peaches, bananas, and apple cider vinegar on the nose, very acidic and sharp attack on the tongue but a little soft cucumber water on the finish.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Starting to brick around the edges, compared to the 2002 Leoville Barton it was a little further along. Very aromatic and ready to drink Pauillac with some vanilla fudge, blackberries, cassis, but also freshness, sandpaper thin tannins that provides a structure and grip but mostly a mature profile with a soft round attack. Lovely. In my humble opinion this is the perfect example of a balanced Bordeaux wine that manages to be expressive, drinkable but also serious and elegant.

  • 2002 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

has not budged a bit in three years. After ten hours and a decant it opens up really really beautifullly to some milk chocolate, wet pipe tobacco, spice box, dark plums and a savory licorice touch. But first 8 hours this was really not showing at all - mostly grip and astringent tea and licorice on the palate. I loved this!

  • 2002 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The most backward bottle of the four we opened, on the other hand it was not as sullen after the cork was pulled as the La Mission Haut-Brion 2002 but it actually stayed very much in character over ten hours so obviously has much more to give. We all liked this very much but no one had it as the best wine in the line up. Very very classic Medoc and St Julien whereas the other 2002 wines maybe were not as easy to pick out blind in terms of geography within Bordeaux. Lean, black fruit, elegant, savory, a little peppery and dry but with a velvety palate and a rather long, grippy finish.

  • 2002 Château Cheval Blanc 96 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

my oh my. This was singing from the get go and only got better with time in the decanter. Seamless palate with fruit, intensity, but also structure, freshness and some nice Christmas spice and earthy notes to go with the plums, dark cherries, blackberries and dark chocolate. WOTN. no doubt.
