If you don't like Sauvignon blanc, try this. Crazy mineral, almost funky, with tea leaves and a touch of lime.

This was my favorite chardonnay of the flight. The nose suggests a rich wine, the initial palate is also rich with lemon oil, oak, spice and golden fruit. The midpalate and finish have substantiali minerality so that the wine is not weighted down. There's a great contrast between the minerality/acid and the oaky fruity elements.

Very big and full-bodied, with matchstick sulfur oak. If you're a believer, lay these down for a while. If you're not, move on to better wines.

These Leeuwins are interesting, every bottle is a little different. This one, to me, was a bit of Jekyll and Hyde. The wine is quite big, bigger than I remember previous bottles. Yet it manages to stay balanced, probably because there's a lot of acid on the palate and finish. I've gotten hints of real minerality on previous bottles, I didn't get any on this one, the acid is evident and a good substitute for minerality. I've said this many times, but this wine is a world class chardonnay, and this bottle was drinking very well. I preferred the 2011 Mount Eden in this flight, but I'm scoring them the same, because qualitatively they are equal and my preference to the Mt. Eden is a personal preference on my part.

My experience with Thomas pinot is from good to great. This was one of the great bottles. Earthy, savory, deep and ponderous. This is a wine that you stand up and take notice of.

Highly perfumed, really suave, this a wine I could sit for a whole evening and drink, just thinking about the wine. The only issue with it was that it was paired with a 2008 Thomas, which I only scored one point higher, but I was so intrigued with that 2008 Thomas. I've found many Domaine Serene's wines to be quite floral, and this was no exception. This wine shows the balance that pinot has.

Good structure, this drinks young, but my experience with this producer suggests they're not a long-lived Bordeaux. So I suspect it will drink better in 3-5 years, but I won't push it.

A 2 hour decant, smelling it while decanting, the nose was very fruity and structured. I was surprised when it was eventually poured into glass and tasted that there was a fair amount of pruney or raisined fruit. This was consistent with my experience 6 years ago, I called it maderized at the time, and questioned whether the bottle was heat damaged. At this point, I think that's how this wine tastes, and your enjoyment will be determined by whether you can handle that raisined flavor. Personally, even in older wines, I'm not a fan of that profile. YMMV. Beyond the raisined flavor, there's a lot to like about this wine. I'll probably pop and pour another bottle just to see what happens.

Basically pop and pour. I loved the structure here, and the lively palate. This drinks like a bordeaux blend with a little bit of Napa sunshine. Not heavy or spoofy. This was very close to a 93, stylistically it has that score in spades, but qualitatively I can't go there, yet.

Consistent with previous notes. This is very good but not great sauternes.

Yeasty, funky and almost smoky, with a lot of minerality as well. This is a really fun champagne style.
