Burgundy lunch

Introduction

Lovely lunch at Wah Lok with new wine friends from CT, always a pleasure to drink Burgs at peak maturity - not something I get to do often for sure!

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Seriously impressive wine. An old-school, structured Burgundy, similar to old Faiveley but more refined. Lovely layers of aromas on both nose and palate that only the best producers have, mainly dark fruit with some glimpses of red. Fabulous intensity and finish. Ready for prime time.

  • 1993 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Clos de Verger

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Another old school burgundy, fully mature with some tertiary notes of sous bois. Guessed this as an off-vintage because the fruit was a little dull, but turned out to be a 1993. Elegant on the entry but I found it slightly austere with biting tannins that led me to CdB. Went downhill after a couple of hours with feral notes but at the beginning it was a very good drink.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Popped and poured, this was on top form right off the bat but entered a shutdown phase, before reemerging again. Bright, driven red cherry fruit, and was also drinking much younger than its age which suggested a strong vintage. Only quibble was the slightly candied and astringent finish that was distracting. Very good showing.

  • 2007 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Rounded texture and ripe, honeyed yellow fruit that led me to Meursault. Sensible oak use that gave weight and the pedigree of fruit was able to stand up to it. Some age on the wine but not as advanced as the 04 I had previously. Drinking very well now.
