Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2003 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Nose: This has been opened for several hours before I got to it and it certainly helped. There is a darker edge to the tones of dark red cherries, tobacco leaf, black raspberries, licorice, black currants, cedar notes, and some spice box. While there is a richness to the fruit, it is all in balance right now.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with medium acidity and resolving, medium+ tannins. The structure feels like it’s fully in the mature stage as the tannins are still there, but they aren’t the main event. There is a density and richness to the feel with dark red cherries, black raspberries, black currants, tobacco leaf, cedar notes, and some spice box.

Overall: This is mature and ready to go. The darker edge of the vintage certainly shows up, but it isn’t overdone and more adds a degree of mystery. This is in no danger of falling off any time soon, so one can hold or drink to their pleasure.

  • 2011 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile 93 Points

    France, Alsace

Nose: From the get go, the nose is sultry and deep, filling the glass with Oils, meyer lemons, saline, apples, poached pear, quince, honeysuckle, yellow flowers, and mineral notes. There is excellent depth and class here that makes you continuously want to go back and smell it repeatedly.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with racy, high acidity. There is so much texture and balance to the feel with oils, meyer lemons, poached pears, apples, honeysuckle, yellow flowers, and mineral notes.

Overall: This is killer. It is drinking beautifully already and has a way about it that is immensely enjoyable. There is still plenty of life ahead of it and this will clearly age for many more years.

  • 2018 Résonance Chardonnay Hyland Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

This is yet again, an insanely delicious Willamette chardonnay. I really would love to try this when it has more age on it.

Overall: This is drinking beautifully at this young age. There is plenty of life ahead of it as the acidity has good youth and the tones have freshness.

  • 2016 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand 93 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Nose: The nose is deep and soulful with beautifully balanced tones of warm oils, red apples, nectarines, lemon drop, vanilla, spice, yellow flowers, and crushed rocks.

Taste: The feel Full bodied with tart, high acidity. The acidity is still youthful, though not overpowering. The feel is deep and broad shouldered with tones of red apples, nectarines, lemon drop, vanilla, warm oils, vanilla, yellow flowers, and crushed rocks.

Overall: This is young and needed over 3 hours to fully open up. This is a killer, young Zind-Humbrecht that shows off a lot of deep and richer tones. Though this is drinking a bit right now, it can certainly use another 3-5+ years to fully show its stuff.

  • 2017 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Nose: This had been opened for a while when I tasted it and it was absolutely gorgeous with flowing tones of black currants, dark red cherries, leather, fresh ground coffee, roasted herbs, violets, spice, and raspberries with a touch of cedar tones.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with chewy, high tannins and tart, medium+ acidity. The structure is youthful, but not overpowering at this young stage. There is a lot of depth and balance with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, black currants, roasted herbs, cedar tones, leather, violets, and some coffee tones.

Overall: This is drinking surprisingly well after being bottle opened for ~6 hours. It still needs time to fully come together, but this feels like it is more of an early drinker than a long-haul Sassicaia.
