Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2019 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Final 1/3 of a bottle that had been opened two nights earlier (them recorked, refrigerated). So rich and powerful, this showed so much apple and pear with obvious Grand Cru density. Slightly clipped finish, but is that the time the bottle has been open? Clearly very good, I'd say 92-93 points tonight, but that is unfair given the time this bottle had already been open.

  • 2016 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Seemed both oxidized and corked!

  • 2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

So much ripe orchard fruit from start-to-finish with impressive concentration and raw power throughout, but also bright and minerally textures, most notably on the long finish. Great already now, but with upside. I can hope this becomes as complex and ethereal as the bottle from 2000 tasted later in the evening.

  • 2000 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Mostly ripe orchard fruit with some apple tart and butterscotch hints, wonderfully supporting with uplifting textures. Simply great balance, good+ length and density. Great freshness for its age, while also allowing the complex nuances of maturity to start emerging. Served blind to the group (after 2016, 2019), everybody thought this much younger than its actual age.

  • 2000 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Drinkable, but very tired. This was the 2nd of 7 bottles bought a few years ago at auction, and both have disappointed.

  • 2019 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Enjoyed alongside the 2013 over almost 2 hours. Opulent start with gobs of ripe black and blue fruit with sweet spice that just captures your attention. Palate is more restrained vs nose, with a more layered and complex set of red, black, and blue fruit that are huge and robust at the start and finish, just slightly less composed in the middle (right now). I would say this is 93 points for the pleasure it provides right now, but has 95+ point potential, 2029 forward.

  • 2013 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Enjoyed alongside the 2019 over almost 2 hours. Black and red cherry and berry aromas come across as robust without seeming ripe. Similar palate profile, showing lots of richness without seeming ripe, again giving a complex combination of black and red fruit. This is seamless and perfectly harmonious, even if not as concentration and attention-grabbing as the 2019. Stayed fairly consistent over a couple of hours in glass.
