Introduction

Frank wanted to do a Kutch Retrospective so we got 9 people to put together 7 Chardonnays from 2014-2020 and 9 Pinot Noirs from 2011- 2021 minus ‘19 and ‘20. We tasted them in 2 flights, whites before lunch and reds afterwards

Flight 1 - A couple random reds. (3 Notes)

I brought these bottles down to share, I thought they played out well.

  • 1981 Villa Mt. Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Brought this on a trip to FMIII’s and forgot by Durand and he didn’t have an ah-so. Used a hinged corkscrew and crossed my fingers. If course the worm was 1/4” too short but the cork pulled short of that 1/4” intact. Was able to pull the last bit out without it crumbling.
Decanted and followed throughout the evening. Sitting here this morning with a pour for the note. Brick red towards ruby with a leathery nose but nothing more. Fresh raspberry compote, pleasant texture, really a seamless palate transition from fruit to finish. Great balance of acidity with red currant and that leather undertone. Some chalky tannins follows to round it out. Really pleased with the showing at 40yrs of age. A lot has happened since then, it’s fun to take a look back in history.

  • 2002 Flowers Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Green Valley of Russian River Valley

    (4/30/2022)

Pulled the cork and would have sworn it was in year three of bottling. Barely 1/16” penetration. Would have guessed the same by the way the wine showed. Lots of fresh fruit, almost too much, looking for some acidity to poke through. Lush strawberry, raspberry, cherry fruit but not over-ripe, just a bit flabby and not showing much structure other than the fruit. I have one more bottle in my cellar that will likely wait until 2027 to see if the fruit fades a little and it takes on some secondary flavors. A variation from the bottle I opened in 2018 which displayed much more acidity.

  • 2010 Halcon Vineyards Syrah Alturas

USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands

    (4/30/2022)

My last 2010. Man do these keep getting getter or what? Loads of blueberry, red meat and bacon. Lots of bacon. Palate is still fresh and alive with the stem inclusion adding to the lift. Concentrated dark fruit, wild game and a chalky finish. Easy 5-10 years remaining on this wine. Well done Paul!

Flight 2 - Sonoma Coast Chardonnays and 1 Santa Cruz Mountains (7 Notes)

Flight 3 - Sonoma County Pinots (9 Notes)

No ‘19 or ‘20, Jaime put together a ‘21 composite of equal parts McDougall, Falstaff, Bohan and Mindego Ridge that will never see the light if day again but gave is a peel at what 2021 has to offer.

  • 2011 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

    (4/30/2022)

Signature Kutch fruit, strawberry rhubarb, bing cherry, round palate of red berries, great acidity, fresh and juicy. Drinking fabulous.

  • 2012 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (4/30/2022)

This started out big and bold. Dark fruit with a wall of tannins. After a couple hours the nose picked up a gamey note, the palate opened up but it still had hard edges. Went for a late taste but one of the other tasters took it home with him.

  • 2013 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

A little matchstick reduction on the nose, brighter than the ‘12, expressive dark red fruit a little bitterness on the finish.

Nose similar to the ‘11 with that strawberry rhubarb thing going on, bright red fruit, great mouthfeel, complete, great finish made a nice transformation over the course of the day.

  • 2017 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

  • 2018 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (4/30/2022)

Darker fruit profile than the ‘18 with black cherry dominant, bigger texture as well. Big mineral streak and a touch bitter on the finish with a firm tannic wall. Needs time.

  • 2021 Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (4/30/2022)

This wine is a composite blend of equal parts Fallstaff, McDougall, Bohan and Mindego Ridge barrel samples that Jamie put together for this tasting.

Ruby red, bright and juicy, blueberry raspberry, really expressive fruit like tge ‘11, nice blend. Too bad we’ll never see it again. I really dig what 2021 has in store for us though.
