  • 2016 Danjean-Berthoux Givry 1er Cru La Plante 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru

The nose was striking and well balanced right away with sour red cherries, raspberries, sandalwood, spice notes, licorice, violets, and earth notes. There is excellent balance, but this does lack some depth to the nose. The Medium bodied feel is a little rough around the edges, but balanced with crisp, medium+ acidity and slightly coarse, medium tannins. The nose is much better than the palate right now and maybe with some age the structure will work out better. It still lacks in some areas and it will only improve so much as the terroir will let it.

  • 2015 Domaine Gérard Julien et Fils Nuits St. Georges Aux St. Julien 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

This has an understated, rustic power beneath it with balanced tones of tart red cherries, sour red fruits, cranberries, raspberries, red flowers, spice notes, orange peels, smokey tones, and crushed rocks. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with a slightly rustic take to it along with crisp, medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The structure clearly has some youth and this will need more time to have it peel back and really open up to express itself.

  • 2015 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

The nose is uplifted and perfumed with a delicate nature to the tones of strawberries, red cherries, rose petals, fresh picked berries, spice notes, crushed rocks, and some hints of earth. The Medium bodied feel has a lighter touch with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is lovely and understated. In other words, classic Pataille as this is extremely elegant and the kind of Pinot Noir that can only come from Burgundy and this winemaker. This will likely need another 3+ years to fully round into form as the acidity is a bit extra crisp right now and the tones aren't fully working together just yet.

  • 2018 Jean-Yves Devevey Volnay 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

There is a bit of a brooding quality to the nose, but more in a dark fruited and mysterious way with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, dark plums, black tea, spice notes, warm mushrooms, crushed rocks, and violets. There is good depth and it doesn't come off as ripe as the vintage can be. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. This will certainly need the better part of 6+ years to begin to show itself. There is definite upside here as this is a lovely, young village volnay.

  • 2017 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

The nose is lovely and high-toned with red cherries, red berries, perfumes, wild flowers, strawberries, vosne spices, violets, and wild flowers. This is really well put together and a nose that makes you think of a clear, mid-April day. The Medium bodied feel is elegant and poised with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. The structure is youthful and deceptive. There is an expressive side to the feel, but it doesn't feel like it is revealing everything just yet.

  • 2015 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

This is showing off a richer and more intense side with some noticeable oak right away. There is good depth with darker tones of black cherries, raspberries, licorice, peppery notes, sweet tobacco, and spice notes. The nose shows a riper and more oak-driven side. The Medium/full bodied feel shows off some richness with the oak tones showing themselves as well. The structure is painfully youthful with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. If the oak integrates a bit with time, this will be a much better wine. It will likely always be one that plays more to a richer style, so hopefully another 7+ years can settle it down and balance it out.

  • 2016 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

This is just a massive step up from everything that has been poured before it. This brings on so much perfume and depth that you just want to get lost in the glass with the tones of red cherries, strawberries, fresh picked berries, orange peels, spice notes, toast, and rose petals. The Medium bodied feel is suave and balanced with excellent depth and a lengthy finish. The feel is so lovely that it almost hides the tart, medium+ acidity and fine-grained, medium+ tannins. This is absolutely gorgeous now and it can get even better with age. This is a wine that feels like it will have a fairly open drinking window, but patience will be rewarded when this really turns on the aromatics.

  • 2016 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

This is intensely perfumed and on the riper side with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, licorice, spices, wild flowers, and roses. The Medium/full bodied feel is plush and elegant with crisp, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. There is a lot of baby fat to the tones that will need to be shed with age. The ripeness doesn't come through as much on the palate, though the structure clearly is youthful. This will need at least another 6+ years and in reality be starting to rev up around 12-15 years.
