Flight 1 - Dinner at Daisies (7 Notes)

  • NV Olivier Horiot Champagne Métisse Noirs et Blancs Extra Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is aromatic and balanced with tones of dough, peach, apples, pears, jasmine, red berries, jasmine, toast, brioche, and roasted nuts. There is really good interplay between the autolytics and the fruit that works great already. The Medium bodied feel is round and elegant with racy, high acidity. I forgot to get down the disgorgement on this, but it was bought recently. This can use another year to fully smooth out as the acidity has a bit of extra sting to it at the moment. l

  • 2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

This saw a few hours of air ahead of time. When it became time to drink this at dinner, it was beautifully expressive and deep with flowing tones of raspberries, red cherries, christmas cake, tart red fruits, baking spices, herbs, violets, and orange peels. This is a real joy to smell right now as the tones just come together in harmony and poise. The Full bodied feel is silky and deep with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is just lovely and in a great zone. This is a lot of fun to finally drink one of these at a real point of maturity. I'm not sure that this will "get better" from here, but it certainly has the legs to last many more years to come.

  • 2009 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

This was decanted for a few hours before dinner. This was expressive and polished with well balanced tones of red cherries, herbs, fresh picked berries, violets, spices, cocoa, licorice, leather, and currants. This is a nose where it takes a few goes to process it all. The Full bodied feel is polished and deep with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. There is a lot of poise, elegance, and depth that works together just perfectly right now. This has some smooth edges and a slight bit of gloss, but this isn't close to an overdone Merlot. This shows off what the grape can really do as there is a level of stature and elegance that really makes this wine.

  • 2006 Sesti (Castello di Argiano) Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This saw a few hours of air before dinner. Upon first smell, this is completely turned on and savory as it fills the glass with dark red cherries, raspberries, licorice, herbs, tobacco, balsamico notes, dried spices, violets, and rose petals. The Medium/full bodied feel is deep and pure satin with refreshing, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. While there is still some noticeable tannin, the structure is pretty resolved and has given way to a gorgeous, mature Brunello. There is plenty of life ahead of this, but there is no reason to not open a bottle and enjoy.

  • 2018 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

While this saw about 3 hours of air, it badly needed more. This was still a bit tight and coiled up. Even with it being grumpy, the depth was absolutely there while showing off elegant tones of olive paste, briney notes, licorice, black cherries, raspberries, earth, black pepper, and bits of currants. The Medium bodied feel is deep and balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, high tannins. The structure is extremely youthful and a bit imposing. What is here is still really good and with a ton of promise. I would love to try this again in another 10+ years as it has all the ingredients to be a monster.

  • NV J.L. Vergnon Champagne Grand Cru Conversation Blanc de Blancs 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This is pristine and fresh with Almonds, pears, white fruits, peaches, vanilla, white fruits, saline, biscuits, mineral tones, baking spices, and warm dough. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and fresh with tart, high acidity. This is classic Blanc de Blancs in all of the good ways. There is an expressive side to this while showing good depth across the nose and palate.

  • 2010 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Comtesse Marie de France 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

The nose is upfront and richer with tones of brioche, red apples, golden grahams, cinnamon spices, quince, pears, and toast notes. Though there is good complexity, it does lack some depth and expression. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced with refreshing, high acidity. This is a good Comtesse, but it really lacks that bit of extra the cuvee normally brings. It could be that it needs a few years to come together, but it's still just lacking a bit overall.

Flight 2 - Bubbles at the best possible place to have them: Pops (7 Notes)

  • 1996 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Simply put, this is just a knockout. There is a ton of depth and layering to the nose as it fills the glass with red apples, spiced pears, cinnamon, baking spices, honey notes, stone fruits, brioche, toasted almonds, marzipan, vanilla beans, and some marmalade. The Medium bodied feel is gorgeous and textured with crisp, high acidity. The acidity is beautifully integrated and there is so much depth on the feel. This is just wonderful and is drinking at its best. This still has plenty of life left in it, but this is here to be enjoyed and enjoyed immensely.

  • 2007 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is elegant, polished, and deep with tones of apples, quince, pears, nectarines, toast, creams, vanilla beans, cake frosting, baking spices, jasmine, yellow flowers, and some biscuits. This shows off very good depth and class with a seamlessness that just allows you to get lost in it. The Medium bodied feel is so balanced and elegant with tart, high acidity. This is drinking perfectly right now. This can certainly age for years to come, but it just now comes down to personal taste as to how mature one wants their champagne.

  • 2015 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Vénus Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs 95 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

The nose is just so deep and taught right now with tones of green apples, kaffir lime, lemon peels, crushed rocks, saline, acacia flowers, jasmine, baking spices, mint, ginger, crushed rocks, wet stones, biscuits, and a bit of toast. The Medium bodied feel is deep and balanced with racy and youthful acidity. This shows off a lot of tension on the nose and in a good way. There is great depth and balance with this really showing off how great Agrapart is.

  • 2008 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This was from Magnum and it was just killer from the get go. The nose is beautiful and balanced with tones of red and green apples, kumquats, quince, pears, mineral notes, white flowers, baked bread, warm dough, baking spices, and a good dose of biscuits. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and deep with mouthwatering, high acidity. This shows more of the autolytic side while also showing lovely and rounded citrus notes. This is just fantastic right now and a real joy to drink.

  • NV Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve 93 Points

    France, Champagne

There are so few champagnes in my life where I am as consistently knocked out as consistently as I am with the Bereche Brut Reserve. This is always wonderful and it will be a terribly sad day if it doesn't completely deliver.

  • NV Famille Moussé Champagne L'Or d'Eugène Perpetuelle Blanc de Noirs 92 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is lovely and extremely expressive with complex tones of red apples, quince, bosc pears, honeydew, yellow flowers, meyer lemons, toast, baking spices, cinnamon, crushed red berries, and some warm dough notes. The Medium bodied feel is elegant and balanced with tart, high acidity. This is a great change of pace from the rest of the champagnes and is one I'll definitely seek out again.

  • NV Laherte Frères Champagne Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is expressive and fresh, filling the glass with strawberries, red fruits, peaches, orange peels, red apples, spiced pears, roasted nuts, roses, warm dough, biscuits, and toast. There is very good depth and complexity to the nose with a lovely, toasty quality. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and polished with tart, high acidity. The acidity has some sting to it, but it isn't too overpowering. This is always a winner for me and this bottle was no different as I'm always happy to have it.
