Ken had a number of us over Sunday afternoon to watch the final round of the Masters and taste through a complete vertical of the Numanthia wines with a couple of Termanthias popped at the end and later some bonus 'golfer' wines (an Engelbrecht Els and a Greg Norman Shiraz, neither of which I got around to trying). I found some of the slightly older ones a little underwhelming considering the hype about these, but some of the younger Numanthias were truly knockouts. A really fun afternoon - thanks a lot Ken for your generosity in hosting this and opening those stellar wines.
All the wines were double-decanted a while beforehand. I found the younger ones more impressive for the most part, although the 01 stole the show for me. This was the only one out of magnum though and seemed to be developing at a much slower rate.
I think these were just popped and poured after the Numanthias. Massive wines, and the 2000 was probably my favourite of the night.
2003 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Im Breumel Riesling Spätlese trocken 88 Points
Germany, Pfalz
Pale straw colour. Nice nose that shows citrus fruits, pear, flowers and minerals with time. Palate is rather tight offering lemon, grapefruit and pear over chalky minerals with good acidity. Finish is medium length, but shows a little warmth with the 13.5% alcohol poking through.

2006 White Helix Chardonnay James Berry Vineyard 91 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Light yellow colour. Great nose with lots of minerals, white fruits and hints of vanilla and butter. Medium bodied on the palate with bright flavours of white fruits, yellow pear, some citrus and lots of minerals lifted by good acidity. Very nice long finish.

2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 89 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Deep gold colour. Nose shows interesting almost oxidative flavours with aromas of marzipan, honey, roasted nuts, flowers, orange peel and white fruits. Palate offers similar flavours, but it has a slightly flabby mouthfeel with low acidity and a medium length finish.
