Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile

    France, Alsace

Tasted side by side with the 2007 Clos Ste. Hune. Light yellow. Lighter weight, mostly grapefruit, tart acidity. Young, brisk, and unevolved at this point.

  • 2007 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune

    France, Alsace

Tasted side by side with the 2007 Frédéric Emile. I could almost apply what I said about its stablemate to this wine. Perhaps a little more stone fruit here in addition to grapefruit, but otherwise, very little to differentiate the 2 wines in terms of weight or intensity today. Whether or not they will diverge over time remains to be seen, but at least right now, the Clos Ste. Hune does not stand head and shoulders above the Frédéric Emile or make a convincing argument that the price differential is justified. Lean and youthful now. It should last for many years though.

Decidedly more floral and exuberantly high toned later in the evening.

  • 2000 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune

    France, Alsace

Half bottle. Deep yellow color. Expressive ripe yellow peach. Rounder, more glycerine, and less austere than the 2007. A completely different animal, fully mature and showing secondary notes such as petrol. A treat to taste and a terrific showing. Thank you, Don.

  • 2004 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Tasted alongside 2009 Raveneau Valmur. Yellow and even a young Chablis glint of green. A bit of sulfur plus oyster shell brininess. Medium body, not a huge Clos. Citrus and apple, excellent acidity, very good length. Maybe with air a little mushroom creeps in, but this was remarkable for its freshness and vigor at this point-the premox gods smiled on this bottle. Not as dense, weighty, or ripe as the Raveneau. Thank you, John.

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Tasted alongside 2004 Dauvissat-Camus Les Clos. Pale yellow. Some sulfur here too that blew off as well as a transient blast of pineapple. It quickly became more typical and more Chablisien with floral notes, citrus, broth, and a touch of the signature Raveneau honeysuckle. Richer and more wood-inflected than the Dauvissat Grand Cru but it gained focus and structure even as it warmed. Outstanding now especially for the vintage, and it has a long way to go. Thank you, Robert.

  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Vendanges Tardives

    France, Alsace

Half bottle. Light golden color. Ripe yellow peach and high toned secondary perfume. Rich and sweet for a Trimbach VT wine, but it retains excellent acidity and thrust with increasing spice as it opens. Delightful and fully mature from this smaller format.
