Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2015 Weingut Knoll Blauer Burgunder Federspiel Loibner 85 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Very different from when I had this early on; I much preferred it fresher. This is in a really weird spot, with lots of umami notes and this strange meaty note underneath heightened perfumed aromatics. Better as a food wine, but the disparate elements here just aren't working for me.

  • 2012 Nikolaihof Riesling Reserve Steiner Hund 93 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Drinking fantastically right now, this is a much lighter style of fully dry riesling that I could see myself getting behind. Low sensation of alcohol, but with unmistakable riesling mineral freshness. Elegant, bright, and very nice right now, while it maintains still a little bit of primary quality.

  • 2013 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault Les Tillets 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tastes more reduced on the palate than the nose would suggest. Pretty austere -- this doesn't have much fruit going for it, and on the palate the reduction seems to overwhelm most everything else. Not as fruit forward as I'd like in my white Burgundies, and there's a bit of thinness on the palate overall as well.

  • 2019 Au Bon Climat Hildegard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Drinks way, way better than I would have expected, given the grapes on the label. There's a really nice touch of freshness here, even though this feels a little waxy and low acid. Quite complex with ample palate weight too. Have to say I'm a fan.

  • 2009 AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto 90 Points

Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore - Inferno

Definitely drinks like a ripe vintage, cool climate wine. Delicately perfumed, aromatic, floral, and lithe. Shows complexity but not as much concentration and weight; unmistakably nebbiolo with its tannins. Stylistically distinct, but a very pleasant bottle of wine all the same.

  • 2019 Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Camiño real 88 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Ribeira Sacra

A hair more natty than I ordinarily would care for; this definitely has some of the carbonic thing going on here. But that said, this comes off with some slight Beaujolais notes, but with more weight and less overtly candied fruit that makes this more interesting. Nice, quaffing red wine.

  • 2013 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte Toscana IGT 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

The prices of these has definitely changed quite a bit in the last few years. Anyway, this drinks quite nicely and shows as textbook sangiovese with a pleasant dried herb note on the nose. Some pleasant red fruit on the nose and palate, with nice acid balance. The nit here is the massive wall of tannin that I'd say is a little hard to get through here. Probably more interesting with age. A shame about how good these wines are though; I refuse to give an overt racist any more of my money.
