Introduction

It was interesting that this Cabernet tasting was not a Napa-thon, lots of Washington cabs.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2001 Lawrelin Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Splash decant. Blueberry and menthol on the nose. This has aged nicely with soft leather and tobacco.

  • 2007 Corliss Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Decanted about 30 minutes. The nose has many layers and makes me think of baked desserts - vanilla, baking spice, sweet fruit. The tannins are fine and there's a dollop of pepper on the finish.

  • 2019 Kelly Fleming Wines Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I don't believe this was decanted, but I followed it for over an hour in glass. Lots of fruit, liqueurish, quite sweet. And on top of all that, I had to agree with a fellow taster that the wine comes across as thin. A strange combination, and one I don't seek out.

  • 2016 Gramercy Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Drank a small pour over an hour. This was a bit on the young side, but still accessible. Cherry, green bell pepper, good acid, savory profile, unobtrusive fruit, medium-firm tannins. This is a great steak cabernet.

  • 2013 Bevan Cellars Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Not decanted because there were regrettably no decanters available. Drank a small pour over about an hour. This is not a shy wine, it is a flashy, attention-seeking wine that is trying hard to impress and succeeds. I like the floral components the best, with silky tannins and a menagerie of fruit.

  • 2019 Long Shadows Wineries Cabernet Sauvignon Feather

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Decanted a couple hours and it probably needed 8 hours, or open in 2029+. Very tannic, green and lots of blueberry. Hold.

  • 2018 Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Passage 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Aerated with a device, drank a small pour over about an hour. The nose has alcohol while the palate does not. The wine manages to be dense and smooth at the same time. There is a lot of red fruit and a bit of earth. I could see this being a crowd pleaser for its smooth comforting rich profile, but it also comes across a little dull. This wine fits my understanding of Duckhorn.

  • 2003 Château Climens 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

This was elegant and well-balanced. Maybe a touch sweet, or it needs some more acid. It is not nearly as sweet as other 2003 Sauternes I've had.
Great balance, lots of spice here too.
