Introduction

Celebrating another year of great wines and the 3-day approach. Had a few friends over to watch the college bowl games and drink some good wines and boy did those bowl games deliver!

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2018 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Dutton Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

First bottle corked but this one is excellent. More of a Oregon style than your typical California Pinot which works for me. Cranberry, underbrush, violets, unripe strawberries and earth. Medium finish and nice acidity.

  • NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve 92 Points

    France, Champagne

2nd bottle much better. Vibrant with lemon, spice, sour apple, chalk, shells and tropical fruit. Super complex and medium plus finish. Nice acidity. Disgorgement 2020. $30 at Haskell's.

  • 2021 Tensley Syrah 94 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Day 1: Alright 2020 was excellent with a fruit forward style but did not overdo it. This 2021 is off the charts! Can't believe no one else has reviewed it but here we go. Black pepper, spice, boysenberries, tar, dark cherry, stone and soy sauce. So thankful that my boys from Thomas Liquor reached out to me and said we have a case and was able to get 4. Should have got all 12 but that is not sharing! Now will have to redo my top 10 of the year for under $30. 94+ points
Day 2: Wonderful on day 2. Black pepper, savory spices, floral, tar, dark berries, stone, soy sauce, minerals and dried herbs. Just an amazing, complex wine with a really long finish. Can't imagine many wines under $20 at this level. 94+ points
Day 3: Still outstanding. Always love those that think wines don't drink well for 3 days. This is for sure back up the truck and one of the best $20 wines I have sampled in a long time. Just amazing complexity on this wine and a true definition of what California Syrah should smell and taste like. Black pepper, boysenberries, minerals, tar, savory spices, floral, earth, dust and underbrush. 94+ points
Recommendation: Buy all the store has to offer.

  • NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Reserve 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Day 1: Biscuit, sour cherry, floral, spice, citrus and earth. Medium finish and good acidity. 91 points
Day 2: Watching the Pittsburg Steelers win another one. Love this team as I grew up in PA. Mike Tomlin is the best coach in the NFL. Back to the wine. It is very nice and offers sour cherry, floral, biscuit, citrus and mild spices. For $29.99 you can't go wrong. 92 points
Recommendation: Solid Rose for the money.
    Disgorgement date 2020.

  • NV Roederer Estate Brut Anderson Valley 80 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Disgorgement date 2/2022 is an easy pass. Two bottles and this one is much worse. Tastes like a Gruet which I can't stand. Chalk, lacks fruit, dust and a bitterness to it. Please look before you buy on the neck of the bottle as I am the biggest promoter of this wine probably in the world but avoid!

  • NV Roederer Estate Brut Anderson Valley 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Disgorgement date 9/2020. So much better. Lemon, citrus fruits, chalk, minerals, spice and sour apple. Excellent. Again everyone please look at the neck of the bottle for the date. It is small but worth the effort.

  • 2014 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah The Unnamed 93 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Day 1: Roasted brisket, white pepper, minerals, raspberries, charcoal, spice and underbrush. While not an off the charts Reynvaan certainly a great value via Winebid. 92 points
Day 2: This wine is extremely young but showing some more promise on day 2. Roasted brisket, white pepper, charcoal, black olives, spices, rose petals, clay and dust. Medium plus finish. 93 points
Day 3: Fading a bit but still nice. Bramble, white pepper, smoke, black olives, tar and earth. This is one of the those wines that is hard to tell whether to drink now or hold but I am going to hold. 91 points
Recommendation: I would hold these for 3 to 5 years.
