Lovely sense of richness and power in the bouquet of white peaches, chalk, almonds and jasmine. On the palate, white peaches, lemon cream, some smoke/flint with a nice buzzing energy and lifting acidity. Finish lengthy and overall medium acidity. This had everything you want - energy, weight, muscle, precision and balance. I would love to revisit this in 5 to 7 years!

Bouquet of fresh plums and apricots with floral undertones. On the palate I thought this a touch youthful and perhaps still a little reserved. Finish here was medium and overall medium acidity.

Bouquet of white and yellow flowers, lemon peel and vanilla. Palate is rich and concentrated with sufficient acidity here that lends some balance to the finish. Overall medium acidity and medium finish.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

I really liked the nose on this, this was showing chrysanthemum, ripe plums, honey, almonds and red apples. Palate showed lovely with red apples, honey and yellow peaches with textures of cream. Love the tension here with just enough acidity at the end of the palate giving it balance and precision.

  • 2012 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

Nose showed red apples, pu-er and malt with some slight oxidated musty notes. Others at the table suggested a bit of cork taint. Palate showed some VA, however looking deeper, there is some lemon pith, mature yellow peaches and apples at the core. I felt that this was a little disjointed and this was definitely not the best representation today.

Reduction and match stick flint, green apples, popcorn, white flowers and white sesame. Palate showed layers upon layers of peaches, white pepper, cream, white flowers with nice minerality, lifting acidity and long finish. I really enjoyed the tension along with the density and balanced structure for this one!

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

Layers of marzipan, honeysuckle, hazelnuts and white sesame. Palate reflective of the bouquet with honeysuckle, cream, pineapples, ripe navel oranges and ripe yellow citrus fruit. This was powerful and rich as well but with some salinity and minerality taking the edge off. That bit of fleeting acidity at the end made it gobsmackingly delicious.

    "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

The wine we had set out to beat for this session.

Bouquet of white flowers, some smoke I think, lilies, white japanese peaches and ripe nectarines. Palate showed sweet peaches, mango, zesty citrus fruit, lemon custard and jasmine flowers. There was quite a nice line of stony minerality along with immense concentration, tension and a lengthy finish.

Most importantly, this was balanced and exceptionally complete. Everything you want and hope to have - an absolutely beauty and the pinnacle of top end white burgundy. Drinking fantastically and utterly delicious!

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

Ginger, yellow peach, oranges and lemon for me whilst showing some VA. Palate similarly conveyed, a touch of VA, lime pith, ripe red apples and some yellow citrus fruit. Nice acidity, there was some nice intensity and tension here, I felt it perhaps a little awkward and not quite balanced.
