Floral red Burgs / '08 or older champagnes

Introduction

We were split into two tables so have divided the notes accordingly. Had a bigger pour and more time with the wines on our table so probably a fairer score.

Included the notes on the 1999/2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année for posterity since they came at the end I didn't pay much as attention to them unfortunately. In any case, not as oxidative as I expected from LGA, a little too sweet and ripe compared to the previous wines.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

Our table's wines so slightly more detailed notes.

  • 2019 Domaine Bernard Millot Meursault En La Barre 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Brought this as an extra for a test-drive. Quite a bit of vanilla on the nose but I am more tolerant of oak use in whites. Honeyed, ripe fruit that suggested old-school Burgundy but at the same time it had the linearity of new-school producers. Lost its freshness on the second day but this was a nice discovery, good value.

  • 1990 Henriot Champagne Cuvée des Enchanteleurs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Drank very youthfully but had so much depth that only age could bring - guessed 88/89 for this. A hedonistic wine with a creamy and round texture, had an impressive amount of tension for a 33 year old wine. Superb.

  • 2013 Ultramarine Blanc de Blancs Heintz Vineyard Sonoma Coast 96 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Disgorged 28/11/17. Wow this ended up being my favourite of the sparklings. Attractive nose with some evidence of oak use, the palate had a good balance between the ripe, tropical fruit, and the high acidity and precision. Reminded me stylistically of Collin because of the beautiful delineation of ripe fruit but someone at the table said it was more similar to Bouchard - just goes to show the heights that this was able to reach. Thankful to have tried this rarity.

  • 2004 Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Grand Cru Fleur de Passion Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

My contribution. Was more tropical and less appealing than the 1999 on opening, but the quality of the '04 vintage prevailed in the end. Gained precision and became more linear, loved the purity of citrus fruit. A very well-proportioned champagne with everything in balance. This opened my mind to champagne in 2019, so was glad to have revisited and shared this.

  • 2007 Domaine Fourrier Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots Vieille Vigne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru

Love Fourriers with a little age, can really show some depth that you don’t expect from their fruit-driven youth. Lifted nose, dark but elegant red fruit, quite a bit of earthiness. Very open-knit and enjoyable but just missing the extra gear the Clavelier had.

  • 2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Had an absolutely wow nose, just the right amount of VA to give a deep and profound nose. Oak was very well-integrated with a little spice on both nose and palate, guessed 2010 Vosne because of the purity of fruit. A delicate Burgundy in a style that I love.

  • 2017 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Brought as a ringer by someone who didn't know it was supposed to be floral red Burgundies but Bartolo is always welcome in my book! A couple of us did wonder if it was Nebbiolo because the tannin and acid profile was clearly Nebbiolo, but we guessed this to be a little older. Exceptional floral nose, elegant on the palate and didn’t have many signs of the hot vintage other than the drying tannins that made us think that this had more age. Not as impressive as the 2012 we had last year, but still a very good wine.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

Wines from the other's tables that were swapped, smaller pour so might not be as accurate.
