Volnay vs Pommard

Introduction

When we were deciding on the theme, I was telling the others that it is difficult to tell these two villages apart despite some citing the usual stereotypes / theory, so I was glad that they changed their perceptions on Pommard after this dinner. But funnily enough I proved myself wrong and got 7/7 for appellation, but probably was just heaven's idea of a joke.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Muted on both the nose and the palate on pop and pour, but got a lot better, Had a dark, seductive nose that was characteristic of the maker but cooler fruit without any greenness, so guessed 2013 Volnay. Had an impressive amount of weight and expression of fruit for a 2011. One of my favourites of the tasting, and thought that this was the best Rossignol on show today.

  • 2005 Maison Roche de Bellene Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes Collection Bellenum 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Not a completely clean wine, tannins were unrefined with slightly roasted dark raspberry fruit, so thought this was from a warmer vintage but was 10 years off. Guessed 2015 Volnay.

  • 2014 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Liked this at first, restrained dark red fruit that was a little high in acid that reminded me of the 2011 Fourrier earlier in the day. Guessed 2011 Volnay, on reveal this had less structure than I expected for Santenots. Got a little pruney with air so this was surpassed by the 2011 Chevrets by the end of dinner.

  • 2010 Thierry Violot-Guillemard Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

My contribution. Dark red fruit with underlying power so I suspected 2010, guessed correctly as my wine (actually the only Pommard which almost everyone got right). Got better with time in the glass, as the fruit became more expressive and delineated. Had a 2005 that was rather muddled but this was very precise. My second favourite at the end of the night.

  • 2014 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Brought this for a friend. Such an elegant rendition of Pommard with the purity of fruit and silkiness of tannins that only a top producer could bring. Surprisingly red-fruited. Easy guess as de Montille since I knew the wine and read the previous notes. The majority's favourite wine, including mine. By far the most balanced and complete wine from the dinner.

  • 2014 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

A divisive wine. Some liked the supposed funk on the nose but to me it was unintegrated oak, even though the nose admittedly wasn't the cleanest. Quite a dark wine to the point of being too ripe and heavily extracted. Guessed this was a Bouchard Caillerets.

  • 2014 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Very accessible and open-knit today with warm red fruit that was on the lighter end of the spectrum that probably misled people into guessing Volnay. But had a tannic bite with a little harshness that made me quite sure that this was a Pommard. Quite ripe so I guessed 2015 Pommard. Was a crowd favourite for its generosity of fruit, I liked it but thought this lacked a little depth compared to the top two wines.
