Introduction

Celebrated our anniversary at home this year owing to a new baby. All in all, an interesting group of wine. The Opus we bought on our honeymoon, but we knew it would disappoint. The Banfi was not good and the QC rocked!

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Opus One 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (5/23/2008)

Drank with lamb burgers. Medium ruby color with bricking along the edges leads to a nose of cherry and currant soaked in oak. The palate while very velvety was devoid of complexity or luscious fruit. The finish was 15 seconds and well integrated. Nice bottle of wine at its peak - certainly overpriced in this vintage.

  • 1998 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 82 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (5/24/2008)

Medium ruby color leads to a nose of sour cherry. Palate has some sour cherry but mostly just sour and acidic. Having had this wine several time this is not a stellar example. Unsure if there were storage issues or it is past its prime.

  • 2002 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 96 Points

    USA, Washington

    (5/25/2008)

Drank on 6th anniversary with waygu filets and black truffle mash pototoes. Decanted 10 hours prior to dinner - deep garnet color leads to big nose of violet, blueberry and chocolate. Velvety palate carries those flavors forward while adding blackberry, dark cherry and anise. Finish last well over a minute. While the big ripe, overly extracted style may not be for everyone, count me a fan. This is the real deal and will only improve with time.
