Introduction

Wonderful Saturday afternoon lunch with my wife at Restaurant Amador and then off to the Opera that night!

  • 2017 Wieninger Pinot Noir Wiener Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature 92 Points

    Austria

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Light amber color. Light and fruity to the taste. Nose: Floral citrus (like tangerine) Great pairing with the potato appetizer. When I asked where to find this, Somm says this sparking is not yet for sale, it's only available at Amador. Sadness. At the conclusion of the meal, somm poured me another glass knowing I really liked it and couldn't go buy it somewhere else! Very nice gesture!.

  • 2022 Wieninger Grüner Veltliner Wiener 90 Points

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Somm indicated that this is their house wine. Local producer. Color is light; almost transparent. Light tannin. Melon on the palate. Paired with asparagus and then with mushroom bread. Good pairings!

  • 2019 Weingut Hajszan-Neumann Riesling Nußberg 89 Points

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Color was a little darker than the '22 Wieninger Wiener Gruner Veltliner before it, but still light colored. More structured. Paired with veal tartar. Starfruit nose. More alcohol on palate than first white. Not really my cup of tea but could tell is a quality win. Typical Riesling palate.

  • 2018 Juvé y Camps Cava Brut Nature Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 91 Points

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Ok, this one was very interesting. First impressions is that this cava was much heaver than the first sparkling served. Color was light brownish gold. By itself had an almost bitter palate. First it was paired with bread/butter course. With that, there was an almost unpleasant aftertaste. At his point was going to score it an 87 and was thinking I was just not a fan of this cava. But then wait! The next dish was a caviar/ice cream dish and it paired really really well so I ended up at 91. Based on this showing on this day, this needs to have a specific type of pairing to make it work and I would not drink this on it's own.

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Color is light gold. Melon on the nose. This sees steel tank and oak. A bit tannic but balanced.

  • 2018 Wieninger Chardonnay Grand Select 91 Points

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Light amber color. Nose is light petrol but pleasant. Creamy palate. Well structured and pleasant on its own. Paired with two different beef dishes. 2nd beef was wagyu. The beef and sauce in both courses were so delicate that this white wine pairing really worked. Being more of a red wine drinker, I think this might have been the first time I've had beef paired with a white wine so was delighted that it really worked!

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. Color is dark ruby red. Dates and licorice on the nose. Smells like alcohol. Very dry wine but well balanced. This one needs food. Somm says he chose this wine to "get out of the way of the chef" for this dish. Paired with pigeon and it really enhanced the flavor of the dish. Great pairing!

    Lunch wine pairing @ Restaurant Amador in Vienna. WOTN! This dessert wine has more minerality than sauternes. Same nose though. Structured, great on its own! The somm is from Hungary and I am glad he has introduced me to this wine which I was not aware of until this lunch. Just ordered some for my cellar!

Closing

I liked that the somm used several REALLY local wines in the wine pairing. It really added to the experience. And then he picked a wine from his own country to finish it off. Top notch pairings!
