Introduction

On a whim a few of us got together to grill some burgers and tast a few pinots blind. We started with a 2005 Flowers Chard while cooking dinner and then moved onto the pinots.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (6/7/2008)

This was a little disjointed at first but with some air it came together. Nice nose of pear with a light touch of toasty oak. I liked the tangy acidity that brought a little verve to this wine. This is exactly what I look for in a Chardonnay -- nice fruit, a touch of oak, and nice acidity in the finish. A real nice wine.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Marsannay

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

    (6/7/2008)

No nose whatsoever. I tried many times to get something off the nose, but just nothing was there. Thin and acidic with not much on the palate. Not corked but possibly cooked?? Not sure, but this was overshadowed big time by the other pinots. I couldn't bring myself to drink more than a half glass.

  • 2005 Arcadian Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

    (6/7/2008)

Beautiful, intoxicating nose of strawberries and cherries. Definitely some earth tones on the palate. Even though this was decanted for a while it is sitll very tightly wound now. Lots of structure and a nice tart finish. This is going to take some time to strut its stuff, but it should be terrific with some age. Rating based on how it is drinking now, it will be much better in 6-8 years.

  • 2006 Kutch Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    (6/7/2008)

Dark cherry, cola , and a little spice on the nose - this wine screamed Russian River Valley. A nice full, ripe, nose but not over the top. Very nice and smooth on the palate. As it warmed up there was some heat detectable, but as long as this wine stayed cool it was fantastic. When it was revealed I was shocked that this was a 2006. It is really drinking well now with a little time in the decanter. I was even more suprised to find out that this was 30% whole cluster and still drinking this well young. If I had some of these I would drink them on the early side as this was ready to go.
