Introduction

A selection of Sunday lunch wines

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2018 Mullineux Chardonnay Leeu Passant Stellenbosch 91 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

(Tasted Blind): Single vineyard on the higher loam-based slopes of Helderberg Mountain. A soft, ripe wine with notes of ripe apricot and white peach slices. Vibrant, racy acidity, there is some honeyed apricots on the mid-palate, toast, plumpness, and a long tail to the finish. Showing some age with that telltale honeysuckle note on the finish.

  • 2020 Capensis Chardonnay Silène 92 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

(Tasted Blind): Attractive, lifted floral-edged aroma of apple blossom, Asian pear, and fresh ripe apples accented by toasty oak, but it's subdued and melted in the background. A lively, fresh acidity, the fruit is well-integrated with the oak. Quite dry on the back palate, linear in shape but with enough stuffing from ripe orchard fruit and yellow peach. Good length.

  • 2018 Bouchard Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

(Tasted Blind): Ripe cherry meets red and black plum. Broad and fleshy with a sour twist this is intense and rather enjoyable. Cherry skin texture stems lead to a grippy tannin whilst brown spices add complexity. Clean, well made, this is rather enjoyable without being over complicated.

  • 2019 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

(Tasted Blind): Earthy, tarry with deep plum cherry and black fruit, very typical of the Nuits St Georges style. The leathery texture on entry has a savoury complexity and spice on this fuller-bodied wine. Hung game, chewy with savoury notes, alongside some red cherry and blackberry, plenty of material in the middle palate gives good concentration - from a top producer. It finishes with a crushed velvet texture that appeals, with a fresh, slightly mineral edge, and the wine is very long.

  • 2019 Casa Ferreirinha Douro Planalto Reserva Branco 87 Points

    Portugal, Douro

(Tasted Blind): A light, golden wine with notes of bruised apple, apple puree, Asian pear, and a touch of yellow flowers. On entry, it is a hard, linear giving a dry, chalky impression that I rather enjoyed as it cut through the flesh of the wine. Its firmness flows to the long finish. There are some savoury, toasty notes that join the flavours of fresh pear and apple pip and lemons. The apple seems unripe, given the acidity. Straightforward, fresh, this is a lovely easy-drinking wine.
