Tasted Saturday, August 19, 2023 by MH Amateur with 78 views

Introduction

Dinner and a bunch of Robert's Pinots. They were all CA based Pinots and we went from South to North.

Flight 1 - Start and charcuterie board (4 Notes)

  • 2014 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Ten 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Nose: Rose and raspberry
Palate: Tannins still present. Sage. Very smooth; no gaps. Still has many years left. "Masculine" Pinot Noir.
    14.5 ABV

  • 2019 Calera Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan

    Nose: Stronger red fruit
Palate: a little heat; shorter finisher. It feels a bit early
    14.5ABV

Went back later in the night and the heat blew off. It settled down and was getting better. Good potential but needs more time.

  • 2018 Peter Michael Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

The first thing that hit me was the color. It was much darker than the first two Pinots of the night. It was almost opaque; deep red/purple.
    Nose: Dried fruit
Palate: Peppery (especially at the end). Red fruit (raspberry?). It seemed to have a mid palate gap. It is a hearty Pinot - big and bold.

  • 2017 Occidental Pinot Noir Cuvée Elizabeth Bodega Headlands 95 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Nose: Rose Petals
Palate: No gap. Classic Pinot profile. Feminine Pinot.

Classic. It was really great. It was the best wine for me and for many others.

Flight 2 - Pizza and garden walk (2 Notes)

  • 2021 Flowers Pinot Noir Sea View Ridge 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Much lighter in color.
Nose: Jolly Rancher (?), cranberry (?), later it started to change to strawberry. I struggled to get the nose and got help from my fellow tasters.
Palate: Fruit forward. High Acid. Short Finish. It was lacking the luscious mouthfeel of some of the other wines.
    14.1 ABV

It was definitely way too early on this wine. All the wines were decanted for 90 minutes before the start of the night but this one definitely still needs a few years.

  • 2014 Texture Pinot Noir 92 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Nose: Strawberry
Palate: Great fruit. Good acid. Cola.
Lighter in color. Looks like a Pinot. Feminine wine.

The age helped this wine. It was drinking very well.
    14.1 ABV

Closing

All the wines were very good. I liked the ones that had the most age on them.

My order of ranking was:
1. Occidental
2. Seasmoke
3. Texture
4. Peter Michael
5. Calera
6. Flowers

No everyone agreed. The general agreement was that the Seasmoke, the Peter Michael and the Occidental were the top three and a cut above the remaining three. I was less impressed by the Peter Michael.
